Humans and dragons had been at war for thousands of years. While humans are smaller and weaker in most aspects, they held one key advantage over their dragon adversaries. The dragons were like animals, driven only by instinct and their desire to feed on humans. As such, up until that fateful day, it had been possible to fend them off using human ingenuity to outsmart and overcome them.
However, one day all of that changed. Suddenly and without warning, the dragons begin to unify. Where in the past they would attack at random and without any semblance of a plan, now working together systematically to tear apart any weak points in the humans' defenses. It was as if someone were giving them commands and instructing them on how to successfully capture their prey.
Soon it was revealed that this was indeed the case. A massive dragon, towering over all others in the same way they towered over humans, announced herself to humanity. She called herself Exedra the Dragon Queen, and unlike all other dragons before her she seemed to have the same level of intelligence as humans did. Under her command, the dragons who had once been a disorganized mob quickly became an unified force and drove humanity to the brink of extinction.
Just when it seemed that the dragons would wipe the human race off of the face of the earth once and for all, Exedra issued an ultimatum. Surrender and be enslaved by the dragons, or become extinct as the dragons raze them to the ground. The humans, left without any other option, chose to surrender to Exedra. That moment signaled the end of an era, and the beginning of another. Humans no longer ruled the world, now it was the dragons who were in control.
Several generations passed since then. While the lives of all of the dragons and humans from the time of that war had long since been lost to the passage of time, Exedra alone still lived. Since the day she first appeared, she never once aged. Humans had hoped that she would one day die, and that the dragons would lose their sense of order along with her. Unfortunately for them, this would never happen. Not only was Exedra immortal, her influence had changed the dragons' very nature. Each passing generation of dragons grew increasingly smarter, until the day came when all dragons shared Exedra's monumental wisdom.
It was clear that humanity would never again exist for any purpose beyond serving the dragons. Many villages existed for the sole purpose of breeding humans as food for the dragons. Others for training humans to become properly submissive slaves for their dragon mistresses. Some villages were built around massive colosseums, where humans would fight to the death against their own kin for the dragons' amusement. There was great variety among the many human villages that existed, but they all had one thing in common. They were enslaved. They only existed because the dragons allowed them to exist, and if they failed to satisfy their owners, they would be burned to the ground or trampled underfoot without a second thought.
This was the role of humanity in the new world. Dragons had taken over and built up a society of their own over the ashes of the fallen humans. Exedra was the supreme authority in the world who was worshiped as a goddess by both humans and dragons alike.
