Ela decided to let the troll be on it’s way because the town could handle one troll if it came to that but it was unlikely the creature was on the warpath. It had been moving at a fast clip indicating it might be running from something, and whatever it was would be the real danger. Besides having it out of the sight meant she was less likely to be tempted to kill the creature. Anger filled her as she saw the destructive path the creature took through the woods. She might need to get back to the creature and teach it that it wasn’t nice to mess with Mother Nature, but as she entered deeper into the woods she saw something that horrified her more.
Something had torched a large portion of the forest leaving a wasteland behind. Ela wondered if she would need help with this because this looked far worse than a group of trolls damaging the land. She reached out with her powers to find out what was behind this crime. The animals shared there memories with her of the fear as the fire spread across the woods. She strained to see further back into their minds but it was difficult to see what had happened as their focus was on survival and not on the cause of the problem. It looked like she would need to go deeper into this wasteland to find the cause for this mess.
She eyed the ground and discovered the footsteps of troops in large numbers moving through the area. Her mind suspected an invasion force of humans from the look of the boot’s size and design. What were they up to and who were they attacking? These were not particularly rich lands and of no real strategic value as most kingdoms were far from this place. A group of monsters might gather in some force but not in these numbers. This was the forming of an army and an army didn’t form unless someone was planning to use them, usually for something very bad. She summoned a raven to take a message of warning back to her circle that something was wrong here.
Her next course of action needed to be decided upon carefully because there was danger here. She needed to get more information on what had occurred here. The suspicion was that a dragon was involved but there were darker things that frequently used fire. Ela shuddered at the thought of having to deal with the dark ones. If they were involved it would mean cultists who might be forming an army in secret up here, and that was a greater danger than she wanted to deal with alone. Her circle was powerful but she wasn’t sure they could defeat an army with dark ones. To gather information she could return to the lumber camp or follow the tracks, but another idea was to get assistance with this quest. It might be the best idea considering the number of enemies she might be facing.
