“I want you to find my son Lucian. I believe that he resides somewhere in or near your lands. You returning him to me would help solidify our relations along with a hefty gold reward to go with it.” King Emeril said eyeing the vampire lord for any reaction.
Elliott kept a stoic face weighing if this interested him at all. King Emeril cared only for himself and everyone else a tool to be used and disposed of when done. Elliott decided to probe, “Has your son been kidnapped by some sinister force that I should be prepared to face?”
The King cautiously said, “I only have limited knowledge of his whereabouts. Of course, I encourage you take all due caution. I would offer you aide but I do not wish to insult your capability. I fear that dark force lay behind this.”
Elliott smiled inwardly knowing the King knew more than he said. Perhaps the son turned traitor and began a rebellion against his father. Or Emeril crossed someone now sneaking revenge. Elliott disliked the idea of someone using his land for purposes other than the vampires. He decided he would investigate the matter further in his own lands. The King no doubt wished Elliott to solve his problem without risking a costly war with Elliott’s land of Narwick. King Emeril could ill afford such a war with the powerful wizard Dreze breathing down his neck. For now, Elliott chose to accede to the request but with a proviso say, “I thank you for the compliment but I cannot guarantee your son’s safe return without knowing more. I do not wish to take this mission and risk our lands’ peace. If you assure me no consequences for failure I will take this task.”
King Emeril quickly responded, “It would grieve me greatly to lose Lucian but I know I can’t task you with perfection. Do your best and our peace will be strengthened.”
With that Elliott turned and made his way out of the great hall. He shifted into a swarm of bats taking flight to home. Upon reaching the castle the bats flew through a window into the throne room gathering together to retake Elliott’s form. He thought about what to do next…
