Karas drank his beer in just two swallows happy to have something other than water in his belly. Being on a mission meant he could only allow himself one a day. Any more and he risked losing his edge but a single beer could help to mellow and relax him in battle. This town didn’t look like it was under the iron fist of a knight but the villain could just come by to collect his “taxes.”
The humiliated man was talking quietly with his comrades but as long as that was all he did they would be safe. Farmers and locals had little use for soldiers or adventurers and gripping about them helped prevent them from doing something stupid. Adventurers might slay a beast or kill an orc raiding party but they usually the opposite of helpful. For every story of help, there was usually five where they seduced a daughter, made unreasonable demands or took a precious child away from the farm to work for them with dreams of high adventure. The fighter had been born upon a farm and been lured away for a life of cold beds, painful wounds, and an empty coin purse most of the time.
There was no way he was going to pass up a hot meal to satisfy the anger of some drunken assholes. Even a plain stew was better than what he had mastered in cooking on the road. Years had not improved the toxic concoctions he produced leaving him with dry rations. It was enough to make an adventurer miss the farm.
“You are in my seat,” a giant of a man slapped a hand on Karas’s shoulder and yanked him around.
The grinned at the table across the room. It didn’t a wizard to figure out this guard had been summoned to deal with him by the asshole. The problem for them was the size, authority and armor didn’t always make a dangerous warrior.
Karas stared at him in the eye as his foot smashed the knee out from the giant. He grunted he collapsed under his weight.
“Feel free to have it,” twisting around his opponent slamming the giant’s head into the thick wooden chair.
“You are messing with the guard!” the asshole roared. “We are placing you under arrest.”
“If you fight me, you are going to make it worth my time,” Karas’s eyes flashed. “Are you willing to pay the price? Because your friend doesn't seem to be doing so well after paying up."
