Nodding quietly, it was frustrating as Scott left without saying much of anything before leaving the room. This was the downside of his not judging things, his expression was conflicted, sympathetic but not rising to offering any words of sympathy or support.
Annoyed but refusing to lash out at his friend, Bob fumed as he sat alone in the living room. When Scott returned he brought a glass of cola.
"The solution to all your problems." He said indicating the glass. The weak attempt at punning 'solution', was about his level of humour. Smiling weakly to show you got the joke, you took the offered glass. It felt oddly appropriate that the cola was a little flat, and tasted a little off.
"How much is the company worth?" Scott asked.
"Oh, millions." Bob answered, "Just now, anyway." Defeat filling his words.
He didn't expect Scott's answer, "$110 million."
The confusion must have been clear on Bob's face. "I have shares, just think of it as me investing in you." Swallowing the last of the cola, Scott seemed more interested in Bob than he had been the entire evening.
"More than enough to make your life worth taking."
"Oh, thanks. I hadn't thought of that. Just thinking about hunting for a new job." Bob snapped.
"Well, now, you'll still have to look for a new job, but at least they won't kill you."
Scowling in frustration, Scott had to continue. "This way, you'll live long enough to see them caught and convicted for their crimes. But you will go undercover until the case comes to court."
Comprehension dawned on Bob's face, as he glowered at the empty glass. The too flat cola and Scott's words now taking on a new light.
"You... you dozed me."
"I saved your life." His reply wasn't defensive, just factual. Slumping into a seat his head spun, though from the drink, of just the revelation Bob couldn't be sure.
