Chapter #24

A Mother Breaks the Chrysalis

    by: Nostrum Author IconMail Icon
You don’t like your mother’s idea, but you know she made up her mind. The writing’s been on the wall for days –first with your dad, then with your sister. She knows about the pens and has a full set. Even if you rejected, she’d find a way.

(And you don’t want to leave her at the mercy of a monster like Marvin Wright, so you nick that idea off the bud immediately.)

You still warn her, for the sake of your family. “You think Tina will be happy with this? She’s not gonna forgive us.”

“Don’t think I haven’t thought of it, Davey.” She looks at you, uneased. “Tina’s got a point. I could try to remake my life, start from scratch – but by the time I do, I’ll be too old to enjoy it. Too many things could go wrong.”

“Same as this, Mom. What if you regret it and can’t go back?”

“It’s too late to.” She grabs the pen case, sighing. “Before I knew about the affair, I thought I lived an ideal life – that I’d live with Paul until the day we’d die. I cannot erase that betrayal now. This,” she says as she shakes the case, “is the same thing.”

“How?”

“Anyone could come and replace us, like they did with Barbara and Cassie.”

“And like you’re gonna do with Ashley.”

“Don’t take it on me, Davey! I know this won’t change Tina’s mind, or yours, but I feel responsible for her well-being – for Barbara’s and Cassie’s well-being too. I won’t ruin Ashley’s life like her... adoptive father did. I’m not going to replace her. I’ll live her life the way she would’ve wanted to – but guiding her so she doesn’t make the same mistakes I did.”

You know deep down she’s trying to rationalize it, but a look at her face tells you everything. She wasn’t comfortable with being Barbara (or Ross), but she feels comfortable inside Ashley’s skin. If she braved being without her thoughts, she’ll endure whatever comes.

Thus, choosing to honor her wishes, you grab the white pen and sigh. “Alright. I did my best. Let’s finish this.”

“Hold on.” She grabs your arm and starts heaving Cassie’s skin. “Help me move these. We’re going upstairs – whichever room. And close the door – I don’t want anyone pestering us.”

--

Your mother laughs at your reaction as she undresses. “Davey... I think the time for being prude is long gone.”

“Still!” You remain inside Tessa, lacking any clothes besides hers. (Or an intention to change.) Which makes it weird when you feel her pussy getting wet as she took her shirt, her breasts bouncing inside her bra. That’s when you turned, and that’s why she reacted. “It’s gonna be you!”

“You already saw me naked, you were naked moments ago, and you’ll have to help me move the cloned skin anyways.” (It’s so odd to hear how she’s already distancing from her old self.) “Plus, I don’t know how it’ll work – I'll need you to help me.”

“I know.” You turn around, only to see Ashley taking off her panties, awkwardly exciting you. “It’s just that... Knowing it’s you, when I wore her and fantasized about... well...”

“Being her?” (And switching halfway doesn’t help either.) “Dave, you don’t have to hide it from me. I know she’s hot – it's one of the reasons I made this choice. I want to feel good with myself, and knowing I am beautiful helps.”

“Mom...”

Fully nude, you notice how Ashley’s influence has changed her. “It’s just for now. I won’t bother you otherwise. And I appreciate that you consider my new looks and that you respect my intimacy – it tells me we raised you well.”

“We?”

“Paul and I.” She snorts, tilting her head. “He ruined it at the end, but he is a good father.” She looks at you, smiling. “Don’t take it against him, will you?”

“I wasn’t gonna.”

“Good.” You brace yourself as she tears Ashley’s back, revealing her old self. For being in her mid-forties, your mother isn’t bad-looking – maybe a bit overweight, but most of it is on the right places. Her brown curls are wet and sticky, and her kind face emerges from Ashley’s sultry look in a sigh of relief.

As she pulls her skin off, you see your mother naked for the first time – fully naked, that is. (You’ve seen glances occasionally, but you’ve kept them to yourself, and the few times she’s caught you, she just laughs it off – just like now.) She takes a deep breath, then looks at you. “Let’s do it.”

With hesitation, you point the green pen and click it. At first, it doesn’t look like anything’s happening, but then your mother starts to feel queasy. You almost leap towards her when she asks you to stop, despite the bloating; with a groan and a huff, she tears her own back only to reveal herself, though with rosy skin that quickly fades into healthy one.

It’s a strange experience, both for you and for her. It’s as Tessa told you – she shed her old skin, but didn’t change. You both grab it, noticing how uncannily similar it is to her. Or at least, you do, for she doesn’t. “This is so odd... It feels so wrong.”

“Why?”

“Everything’s on the wrong place.” She points at her beauty mark, right where the same appears on the copied skin. “This is on the wrong place.”

“It’s not.” You try to think why, only to notice a tall mirror and the slightest glimpse of the beauty mark on the opposite side. “Lemme show you.” You bring your mother close, then stretch the cloned skin right where the beauty mark is. “This is the first time you see yourself as everyone else does, Mom.”

“is it?” She looks at the reflection of her copied skin with awe. “Then... It is a copy of my skin.” She chuckles, sniffing. “The skin I shed.”

“You still look like yourself, Mom.”

“Not once we’re finished,” she tells you. “God, this is so... symbolical. Once I’m back in Ashley’s skin and we merge, it’ll be like I stripped off my old life.”

“Why did you want me to do this?” you ask her.

“I told you – I thought about this. I’ll live out her life, but my old self still needs to exist. If what you said is true, they won’t miss me.”

“I also told you Tessa wasn’t happy with it.”

“I already lived a life as a drone,” she counters. “Might not be too different.” She grabs the black pen and points it at the shed skin. “So how does this work?”

“Just click while pointing at it – like always. Should do the trick.”

“Alright.” This time, it’s her chance to experiment. She clicks the pen, and her shed skin slowly stirs to life, reflating until it becomes an exact copy of herself. Her eyelids are close and she breathes, but it’s as if she was asleep.

And when she doesn’t immediately wake up – as with all other instances – she begins to worry. “Davey? Why isn’t she waking?”

You pat her, but she doesn’t react. She’s breathing, and as you open her eyelid, your mother’s clone’s eyes are moving rapidly, but she shows no signs of waking up. That’s when you ask Marvin, and he answers. “Seems you need the brown pen to wake her up.”

“I see. Should I do it, or--?”

“I guess you should. It’s your old self, after all.”

As she grabs the brown pen and clicks, you see her shiver, and her clone shivers as well. A few seconds later, you hear her clone groaning, grabbing her head. “What’s going on...?”

“You alright?” your mother asks.

The clone gasps, then responds very sullenly. “Yes. I... What happened?”

“Do you know what you are?”

She blinks, confused. “I’m... Marie Anderson.” She then jolts as she sees her twin. “Who are you?”

“I’m you – or, well, I will until some time later. Do you remember what happened?”

She nods, grimacing. “Sort of. I know... I asked Davey to use the pen that’s supposed to copy skins, but nothing afterwards – until now.”

You look at each other knowingly. “So, you don’t remember stripping off your skin?”

“No...” Though she looks confused, the clone’s reaction feels off – like she’s trying to. “All I know is feeling uncomfortable, then nothing else. Why?”

Your mother – the real one – sighs, sitting and grabbing her hand. “I stripped you off me, and we woke you up. You’re...” She rubs her hand tenderly, almost motherly. “You’re basically a part of me. Maybe you’re not the real me, but... You’re someone real.”

“I don’t know if this is true,” she says in a confused monotone, “but if David says so, then...” She looks at your mother, making the exchange extremely eerie. “Now what?”

“I’ll become Ashley. You’ll replace me.”

She grimaces, shaking her head. “But aren’t I supposed to be Ashley?”

“No,” your mother insists. “I made you--” She looks at points at you. “We made you to replace me. Someone has to be me, after all.”

The clone nods without hesitation. “I see. Will I have an opportunity to wear her, though? It feels odd not to.”

Your mother looks at you, smirking. “It seems even my clone admits it, Davey.” She turns to her, caressing her brown locks. “Maybe. But it won’t be sharing. It’ll be a reward, perhaps. In case you want a vacation from yourself.”

“Yeah,” she says, and you can finally see what Tessa spoke about. “That sounds about right.”

“Good.” Your mother grabs Ashley’s skin, nodding. “Let’s do this.”

This is also the first time you see your mother putting on Ashley – and most likely, the last. As her overweight body gets swallowed by Ashley’s slim yet plump look, you try to burn her face in your mind. The clone will be there, but you already know it won’t be the same.

As she gives a final stretch, she nods at you. “Go ahead.”

You grab the white pen and get close to her. You click it, and the beam starts touching the slit of thin skin in her back. Soon, you see the skin merging, and your mother starts to shiver and jitter.

And when you reach the end of her spine, you notice how there is no opening anymore. Marie Anderson is gone – in a sense of a word. Only Ashley Wright remains.
