The unfamiliar feeling of a full belly once again attained, Susan headed back to bed - and almost immediately, to sleep. For her, life was looking up. Her father had booked her a years worth of sessions with the school councilor, who was to help her with the 'emotional stresses of experiencing a familial break-up' - but she barely felt she needed them. She loved her mom, of course, but she'd always been much closer to her dad, and if the usual meals of salad were going to be broken up by food as divine as that she'd eaten yesterday; well, she felt she could probably forget about her mom sooner rather than later. That night, she slept with a wide smile on her face.
The following morning was a school day, a Monday, and with her previous night's expedition completely forgotten, she jumped out of bed at 6:30 sharp and began to get ready for school. It was strange though - for once she felt energetic, rejuvenated. She was almost bouncing as she hurried around her room, grabbing the components of her school uniform from their neatly pressed and folded piles and then tugging them onto her body.
She was a small for her age, a tad shorter than most of her peers and almost dangerously slight; a particularly assertive breeze could shove straight past her, and would probably knock her over as it passed. Still, today she felt enthusiastic and lively, so with a hop and a skip she ran down the stairs in a rush and headed into the kitchen - where she was stopped as dead as if she'd run into a wall by a truly heavenly smell - that of a full fry-up breakfast.
She teetered further into the room, licking her lips excitedly, to see her father cooking at the stove. He looked around as she approached.
"Oh, you're up early. I made us breakfast."
Her eyes widened at the sight - and smell - of all the cooking food.
"H-how come I never knew you're such a good cook, daddy?" Susan asked, stammering slightly in amazement.
He shrugged.
"Well, your mother never really let me cook anything since we got married. But now she's, uh, gone, I can cook as much as I like," he grinned down at her and ruffled her hair with his hand, "We're gonna be eating a lot more good food from now on, Susie. A lot more good food..."
Susie couldn't believe how much breakfast she managed to eat - indeed, she only stopped because she checked her watch, and realised with a start that if she wasn't careful she was going to be late for school for the first time in her nine years. After finishing her mouthful - and thanking her dad extensively - she hurried off to brush her teeth and pack her bag.
Before long she was back, hugging her dad goodbye at the front door. She was just about to leave when he slipped a Tupperware container into her bag.
"For your lunch!" he winked, "Now go, or you'll miss the bus!"
And she trotted off down the road, deeply curious as to what her father had prepared for her.
