Chapter #4

Success is the best...

    by: WillyTheKid Author IconMail Icon
Jeff could still remember the day his dad walked out on him and his mom. It was a Thursday night. His mom had made a turkey loaf for dinner with mashed potatoes. Dad was an hour late. Then an hour and a half. Then 2 hours. Jeff's mother fed him and sent to bed. Before he fell asleep he could hear his parents arguing. Then he heard his father stomp upstairs, throw some clothes into a suitcase and stomp back downstairs. Not long after that, things spiraled downhill. Since his father was the sole breadwinner, the bank soon foreclosed on their house, making Jeff and his mother homeless. They ended up living out of their car for a while. One night at a local homeless shelter, Jeff's mother found a pamphlet for a free sewing class at a local community college. She used that as her motivation to start her own fashion design company. In next 13 years what started out as one woman operation out of the basement storage room in building of the one bedroom apartment they were renting quickly turned into a multi-million dollar business.

One day Jeff pulled his BMW convertible into the parking lot of his mother's design firm. He had just opened the passenger door to let out his girlfriend Becky when a man in a filthy t-shirt and ripped jeans came up to him.

"Pardon me young sir, could you spare a couple dollars? I haven't eaten in 2 days."

Becky caught one whiff of the man's BO and wrinkled her nose in disgust.

"Eww!!! Get away from us you smelly bum!!"

"Sorry about the smell. Guess I missed a few showers too huh?"

He tried to laugh but ended up coughing instead. The whole time Jeff was staring at the man as if he knew him. He then pulled out his cellphone and began dialing. The man noticed it and backed away.

"Hey kid, I was just asking for help that all. No need to get the cops involved!"

Ten minutes later, Jeff's mother walked into the parking area dressed in a knee length skirt, long sleeved blouse and heels. A gold Rolex watch on her wrist and diamond earrings.

"Why did you want to see me sweetie?"

Jeff pointed at the man standing a little ways off. His mother took a few steps toward him and took a good look at him. She then crossed her arms, stuck out one leg and looked over at Jeff.

"I can see why you were so upset. Hello Kurt..."

"Jennifer? Is that you?"

"You two know each other mom??"

"We certainly do Jeff." his mother replied indicating to the man with chin, "That's your father."

"WHAT???"

"Yup, that's the bastard that had you and I sleeping in our old car for 6 months. But you know what, I need to tell him thanks. If it wasn't for him, my company wouldnt be worth 11.3 million dollars right now. So..I appreciate it. Im going to be late for a conference call with some clients. So if you'll excuse me."

Jennifer then turned on her heel and began marching back toward the office complex. Jeff stopped her.

"What do i do now mom?"

"Whatever you want to hon. Its not like we need him anymore."

What does Jeff do?
