... a curse! A pretty nasty one too.

Yeah, this cave was definitely cursed. You remember one year of your apprenticeship under Madame Lustria had concerned all different kinds of hexes and curses, so it took a while to definitively say what kind of curse this actually was. After some time thinking, you realize that this is a curse that steals vitality of the land. Food in the area affected by the curse would be less nutritious, crops wouldn't grow as well, and it became impossible for new babies to be born. Definitely a nasty piece of work, but fortunately there was a way to end the curse. These kinds of magic needed some kind of focus to keep the curse in place; a magic circle, a crystal, or something else that anchored the curse's aura in place. As soon as the focus was broken, the curse would dissipate naturally.

The identification spell that you cast earlier let you know that the focus keeping this curse around was located inside of the cave, and so after taking a moment to cast a light spell on a stick you found nearby, you walked in. The inside of the cave was eerie, the light on the tip on your makeshift staff causing creepy-looking shadows to be cast on the wall. It didn't help that the impossible sensations that you sensed earlier became nastier and more intense as you ventured deeper into the cave. The purple smell shifted to a sickly crimson smell, you hear the taste of rotting trees now, and so on. It was easy to understand why none of the villagers had ventured very deep into the cave.

Fortunately, the same sensations seemed to keep out other creatures. You kept wary nonetheless, but no goblins jumped out of the darkness, or skeletons rose up behind you. It seems that whoever cast the curse had expected that the unpleasant sensations of being near its focus would be enough to deter anyone from entering the cave. Correctly so for most people, but for a young sorceress out to prove herself? Not a chance.

Finally, after an hour of trudging through the cave, with the sensations enough to cause some nausea, you find the source of the curse in a particularly large and round room in the cave complex. The focus of this particular wasting curse is...
