Harold was in Las Vegas for a business convention. The company had sent him alone and wouldn't even spring for the air fare for his wife so he was pretty much all alone. During the days of the convention he had to put on his phony smile and act like he was glad to be here and was interested in what was happening. When he was away from the conventioneers and could find a few moments to gamble he always lost. Giving up from his last gambling adventure Harold feeling sorry for himself felt like the unluckiest person around. Everyone seemed to be having a good time but him. There were people around him playing the games and having fun. There were people who were getting married. Mostly there were people who wanted to be he and he wasn't one of them. He didn't like his job. He was a middle manager who couldn't break of out his level. He didn't realize that if he did he couldn't handle his boss's job. His wife wasn't the prettiest women in the world but she was sweet. He went over all the troubles in his life without considering the good things. He wanted a life change.
An alien (or was it a demon) who was looking for a guinea pig gave the poor man a power he didn't know. His presence around people who weren't happy about themselves (like Harold) would change them. The poor victims would be stuck with the consequences. Harold would not know anything changed and the victims would know why what the cause of the change was.
