A polished metal piston embedded in a square of shiny black plastic lies on the centre of the desk, the familiar steam icon. It hums beneath your touch, releasing a stream of text that resolves itself into a hovering list of VR compatible games in your library. It is daunting to say the least. Since the collapse of the console market and the slow deaths of Origin and Uplay, Valve had become a giant of digital distribution, offering nearly every title from the birth of gaming. Their last sale had cleared out what was left of your bank account.
The list begins alphabetically. Amnesia: The Dark Descent. No fucking thank you. You've heard too many tales - i.e. more than none - of gamers being found dead in their chairs from that game, brain fried and heart exploded with terror.
