It took another month of relentless eating before Claire began to notice the "changes" in her mom's body. But, once she noticed, it was impossible to unsee.
Her mom was getting fatter. And from the way she was eating, it wasn't going to stop anytime soon.
While Claire had yet to understand her rapidly-dwindling fitting clothing supply as anything other than Gran shrinking her clothes in the wash, it had become harder and harder not to notice the changes that were taking place on her mom's body.
Her mom had never been little, both in size and in appetite. But Claire was quite certain that her mom's belly had never hung over the waistband of her pants like that before. And her jeans had never been so tight on her thighs. Once she noticed, she saw the signs everywhere, from the way the chairs now creaked under her weight, to the way her clothes hugged her body. Even her mom's face looked fatter.
If Jen noticed, she gave no sign of it. Claire, on the other hand, felt herself unable to ignore it. Each day, her mom looked heavier and softer than the day before, even as she continued to shovel Gran's cooking into her mouth.
Claire was unsure what to do. Confronting her mom felt wrong, considering how much she seemed to be loving the new extended meals. Maybe it was all in her head. But still, she couldn't help feeling like she should talk to someone.
