Chapter #10

You wait it out, Allison said she'd be back...

    by: Wassel Author IconMail Icon
You started to head down the hall to check on Randall but then reconsidered. The thought of Randall (in any body) being taught the fineries of femininity by your mom and girlfriend was just too disconcerting. With a shudder at that mental image, you settled back down in your room and decided to turn on the tv. You wasted some time flipping channels, beginning to grow bored, when an orderly showed up with your lunch.

"Urgh," you thought, "I suppose one final meal of hospital food won't kill me." To your shock, the meal wasn't actually that bad - at least it was no worse than the food from your school cafeteria, and you managed to survive eating that daily.

You finished eating and watched some more tv. At around 1:00 a nurse brought you some paperwork to sign. She left them with you, saying that as soon as your parents signed off you were free to leave. You started to grab them and go hunt down your mom or dad when Allison walked back in the room.

"Hey, you!" you said, glad to have your boredom relieved. "I was getting ready to find you guys."

Allison smiled and plopped down in a chair. "I'd give your mom some more time. She's in the middle of her 'how to be a woman' lesson." Allison shook her head with an expression of mock pity. "Poor Randall. It's all very embarrassing for him. I swear his face turned green at one point - I really thought he might get sick."

You winced in sympathy, trying to imagine what indignity he must be going through.

Allison continued. "Anyway, she's covering alot of the basics. I'll help him with some of the less awkward stuff when he gets home - makeup & clothes, you know. I'm letting your mom hit the, uh, tricky parts." She laughed a little nervously. "It is kinda weird. I mean, it was funny watching Randall - but strange too, thinking that HE is in that body. And I feel bad for him, especially with his parents being the way they are..."

"Yeah, that sucks," you agreed. "That's why we have to be here for him," you added supportively.

Allison nodded. "Well, he knows he can come to your mom or me with any questions. But he's got alot to deal with, especially in these first few weeks."

You sat in silence for a minutes, both of you considering all that Randall would have to get used to.

You finally spoke up again. "He'll even have to start using her name..."

Allison agreed. "Yes, your mom pointed that out a few times and started calling him 'Laura' to help him get accustomed to it. Oddly enough he's dealing okay with that part, I think. I guess the physical change is occupying enough of his attention." She shrugged and shifted gears. "Your mom was worried about his language and behavior. But aside from the obvious 'becoming a woman' stuff, I think Randall can handle it. You've seen his knack for impressions - and he's certainly watched Miss Card in class enough."

True enough, Randall was pretty good a mimicry. He could always get a laugh by imitating a teacher or a character from tv, so most people just took it as clowning around. But you knew that when he put his mind to it, he could do a passable impression of most people. "Maybe that will help," you thought aloud. "But this situation is different - he'll actually have to pretend to be someone else..."

"Yeah, it's crazy," Allison responded. "But we'll do everything we can to help him pass."

She glanced up at the clock to see that is was almost 2:00. "Your mom should be finished by now. And if not, I'm sure Randall is desperate for a break. Let's go interrupt."
