A sudden queasiness had come over Scarlett. She rubbed her stomach gently to calm it before it got worse. She could see Ally could hear it and saw the look of concern, that had just quickly vanish, return. Something else had changed about her in the last few minutes, too. It really looked like a weight had been lifted from her shoulders, but it was more than that. Did she look different than when she had come in? Scarlett could have sworn her slim friend had looked a little puffy just moments before.
"Scarlett, I have something tell you. I'm really sorry."
"Don't be sorry, like I said you can tell me anything. I'm here for you," Scarlett felt a lurching sensation in her stomach. "Ooh," she moaned softly, doubling over as it passed as quickly as it came.
"I . . . I was pregnant."
"Ooh," Scarlett repeated, this time in apparent understanding.
"No, you don't understand. I was pregnant just a few minutes ago. I was a few months along. See?"
Ally stood up and lifted her hoodie, revealing her flat stomach and unbuttoned jeans. She rebuttoned them.
"You don't look pregnant. What do you mean a few minutes ago?"
"It's, well, you see, it was a curse," Ally said, grimacing at saying the word, "My friend Heather, you remember her, you two met once or twice, passed it to me. And I'm so sorry, but I didn't know what to do-"
"Ooooh, ow," Scarlett said, holding her hand up to signal Ally to stop for a moment as another wave of nausea hit her. "Sorry, go on, I'm not feeling so great right now."
"It's because now I . . . I passed it onto to you. And unless we follow some steps in a few days you're going to be full term."
Scarlett looked at Ally in silence. Ally couldn't tell what she was thinking, although it was clear the waves of nausea coming and going were distracting her from this conversation. After considering it for a few minutes, Scarlett spoke.
