Rebekah was deep in thought as she entered work one Thursday evening, so much so that she hardly even acknowledged the co-workers who greeted her. A simple "Hmm." was the best she could manage to respond with. Of course she had good reason to be thinking a lot. A short while ago, as ludicrous as it sounded, an old gypsy woman had rewarded Rebekah for saving her dog from an oncoming car... by imbuing the girl with a 'special power'.
Even Rebekah was having trouble convincing herself of what had happened, and what she was now capable of. She could now effectively... swap people's body parts without them noticing. She didn't know whether she could swap clothing or anything else as well. But the fact that she could now physically change people's bodies by swapping them with others was astonishing to young Becky.
The gypsy herself, a woman in her 70's also possessed the ability, and she had demonstrated it to Rebekah by swapping the heads of a married couple who passed them by in the street. She swapped them back of course, and Rebekah had to wonder why the old woman hadn't 'acquired' herself a younger body with her power. Maybe she had morals? Since she would have to steal someone else's body or parts of bodies in order to be younger again.
"Becky?" Laura's voice snapped Rebekah out of her trance.
Rebekah looked up, blankly staring at the familiar girl with the dusty blonde pigtail. "Oh, hi Laura." she mumbled, forcing a smile out.
"You're looking puzzled. Something wrong?" Laura pried, more out of concern than anything.
Rebekah shook her head. "No, no I'm fine." she answered Laura's question. Laura just smiled, nodded and then went on her way to her section. She and a few others had started a little earlier than everyone else that day. Rebekah made her way upstairs and proceeded to put her jacket and bag into her locker, then she wandered into the tea room and sat herself down at the table. There were several other staff in there, with others due to arrive. Andrea and Nicola were chatting, each nursing a cup of coffee, Steven was sat next to Nicola drinking his tea, and Natalie was sat texting her fiance on her phone not far from Andrea.
Luke was sat near to Rebekah, but he had his nose buried in his phone too. People would go bonkers if someone took their phones off them. Rebekah thought, as she thought about how reliant on technology humanity had become in every day life.
And over by the window, Liz was stood talking with Aaron about something or other. Liz was leaning on the counter behind her, holding a glass of water in her other hand, and Aaron was stood by with his arms folded just agreeing with whatever Liz said to him. He'd never been a good conversationalist.
Rebekah's mind drifted back to her new 'ability', but she wondered whether her place of work was the perfect place to test it or not.
