As much as you want to see Rick crushed beneath Rebecca's sole, you must refuse her the satisfaction. Adjusting the transposer to reduce Rebecca, you fire in time to prevent any damage to whimpering Rick. A small bolt of energy crosses from Rebecca's shoe to Rick as she shrinks, and though the effect is minimal, Rick is certainly shorter than he was a single second ago, even the modest Rebecca an inch or two above him now.
Rebecca loses her balance after the reduction, falling to the ground in a tantrum of pounding fists and kicking legs, crying out her dissatisfaction with wails and tears. With a final fist into the grass, she turns to Rick, motionless under bright, blue sky. She crawls over to him, putting a hand on his chest and looking into his open eyes. She sobs, "Oh, Rick. Rick!?" His chest rises and falls only barely even with burdened breath. "Rick, get up! I, I don't know what came over me! Please, get up!"
Rick blinks slowly, then as if rebooted, opens his eyes and focuses on the moist face above him, "What just happened? Bex, why are you crying?" The shock must have erased his short term memory, and Rebecca choked through joy, dropping her head on Rick's chest. He puts his arm around her waist and admits, "I have got to stop drinking before class."
Rick waits a moment before escorting Rebecca to her feet, and once standing beside her remarks, "Hey, did you get taller?" Together they walk away, Rick actually comforting his girlfriend unlike any ignorant image you assumed from their constant quarrels. They sit on the hood of Rick's convertible, talking together, smiling, and you leave them be.
"Unbelievable," you comment, sinking to sit beside the trunk of the tree. "This is just wild." You take a longer moment to weigh the possibilities, the rights and wrongs of this handheld machine, before proceeding, "A guy could do some incredible things with this." Holding it above your head, you let time pass with each tick of your watch while the student body recollects onto the field from their hiding places.
