After dinner was over, James returned to his room to finish decorating his notebook. He wanted to watch something on TV in the livingroom but Audrey and his dad was going to watch some sports crap instead. While drawing his hearts, James got to thinking about Lauren. he decided to call her. He didn't have much to say he just wanted to talk to her.
James liked talking to Lauren, but he rarely called her unless he had something he wanted to tell her. But this time he didn't really have anything to say. He actually had a lot to say but he didn't want to tell her about the ring so he just called to say "Hi."
Lauren got on the phone and they got to talking. In a lot of respects they had more common interests. Some of the things that she used to talk about that James would simply humor her about by saying yeah, and sure seemed to be interesting now that he paid more attention to what she was talking about. In the end, Lauren had convinced James (for the first time) to take her to an art exhibit. James for the first time thought it would be really fun to go.
After the phone call, James went down to talk to his father. "Dad," he said. "I have a date with Lauren on Saturday, can I borrow the car?"
"No, Audrey and I are going to the game on Saturday. You can come along if you like."
James begged and pleaded to get the car on Saturday, but his dad refused. That was until without James knowing it, James swapped his dad's authority with his own. Now when James demanded the car, his dad could not help himself but to give in. When Audrey protested, Nick said don't worry about it. We'll take the bus to the game..
