Sabrina was curious. Once her father left the room, she quietly slipped out of bed to put warm clothes on over her sleep clothes and stuck her head out the window. "Charie?" She whispered, looking around to see if the fairy was still there.
The fairy flitted back. "Are you coming or not?" she demanded.
Bo emitted a low, deep-throated growl when the fairy came back into sight. Don't go. He seemed to say. It's dangerous out there. She is nothing but trouble.
Sabrina turned back around to pat him. "Shh, Bo! Daddy will come back in and hear!" Her eyes grew wide as she said this, touching a finger to her lips to silence Bo. Sabrina turned back around to address the waiting fairy, and replied "I'm coming!"
Without a second thought, she climbed out the window and onto her balcony. She shimmied down a nearby tree, using Charie's light as a guide.
Bo whimpered by the window, powerless to do anything, as Sabrina climbed down to follow Charie.
Charie's light flitted left and right, and Sabrina's neck soon became sore from trying to follow the fairy.
"Where are we going?" asked Sabrina.
"Oh, you'll see. In good time." Charie replied. "Just you wait. For now, stop asking questions and just follow me. Ever heard of 'curiosity killed the cat'?"
"Oh, okay. And no, I've never heard of that. But I wouldn't want to kill any cats because I was curious!" Sabrina frowned, but obediently followed Charie, until the fairy led her to the edge of the woods.
Charie didn't hesitate before flying into the darkness of the trees.
"There's wolves in there, Charie! I don't want to go in!" Sabrina cried as the fairy disappeared, leaving the girl at the entrance.
The fairy reappeared, her light flickering in annoyance. "Are you coming or not? If you follow me and do as I say, the wolves won't get you. That's a guarantee. If you choose not to follow me, however, there's no guarantee what might happen to you. There's wolves, bears, witches... all sorts of nasty stuff out there. I couldn't promise your safety. Right after you say no, you'll no longer be my- erm- I will no longer be your guide, nor will I take any responsibility for anything that happens to you" Charie corrected herself before she said "problem" and made Sabrina suspicious. "So, what's your decision?" The fairy hovered just inside the woods, waiting for Sabrina's answer.
