A hunter who happened to go the same way

    by: Cubby Author IconMail Icon
Sabrina suddenly heard a whimper. Was the wolf hurt? She couldn't imagine an animal the size of Rendalf defeated or hurt. She decided to retrace her steps back to where the wolf ran.

"Don't shoot me!" Sabrina yelled, her hand up. The hunter put down his bow.

"Girl, what are you doing in these woods? Have you not heard the stories of the wolf?" he exclaimed, worry in his eyes. "Say, aren't you..."

"Oh, please don't say anything to my father, kind sir," she begged. "I'm in no danger, for Celina--my fairy mother-- protects me and now the wolf and I have become friends." She glanced around, though Rendalf was not anywhere is sight.

"You say the wolf and you are... friends? How is that possible? I've never heard such a tale in all my forty-six years."

"It's true, I promise," said Sabrina. "I came into the woods with a sprained foot and the wolf licked it and the swelling went down. He let me pet him. And I fed him a piece of stale bread. He only kills if someone tries to kill him, you know. I'm surprised you are not stew meat."

"I never shot my arrow at him," said the hunter, taking off his hat and wiping the sweat from his forehead with a rag." I think he stepped on a thorn or something sharp before he even saw me. At least that is what I assumed by the way he whimpered off."

"Oh, no," said Sabrina. "I must go to him and help pull the thorn from his paw."

"I would like to witness that," said the hunter, placing his hat back on his head. "I thought I heard a rumor several years ago that the wolf killed your fairy mother, Celine. Does that not disturb you in any way whatsoever?"

"I will find out," Sabrina said as she searched the woods with her eyes. "Don't believe everything you hear, so my grandmother used to tell me. Hunter, which way did you hear the wolf go?"

"To the west," he said. There is a clearing where the sun shines down. He may be there. Or perhaps in the cave about 100 yards to the north. He may want to hide, I do not know."

"Then to the west it is," Sabrina announced. If he is not in the cleaning, he'll be in the cave. Simple enough."

"Then let's begin," the hunter said, though a bit nervous.
