Safety in the Canopy

by: Cheri Annemos Author IconMail Icon
Celine drifted down from the safety of the canopy to alight on Sabrina's knee. Sabrina gazed upon the fairy who looked so much like her.

"Greetings, I take it you are the leader of the fairies."

Sabrina was greeted with a mournful stare. "You have disappointed me with your carelessness, Seer Sabrina."

Sabrina lowered her head. "It has been a fault of mine since childhood. I try to obey ..."

Celine interrupted. "NO. You allowed one of your powers to be taken. The power will die soon enough, but the huntsman now knows your identity. You followed the lead of one who tried to end your life. Now the Thunderbirds and Gristalka will be upon us and there was no need. The wolf and the fox are loners. If there is a choice to save themselves or assist you, they will choose themselves. The Thunderbirds and Gristalka will destroy this area. They cannot be trusted."

"I don't know what to do."

"You must carry the fairies to the safety of the village."

"How?"

"We should not be here when the evil ones converge on this spot. You have the gift of speed. Allow us to nest in your hair in your hair and take us to the village."

"But you said..."

"I am your mother. I am the only one who will not harm you."

Sabrina loosened the gold netting, it took only a few moments for the fairies to rush to the safety of the netting and to be transported to the safety of the village.

"Mother, it is time to go into the netting."

"No, I will anchor near your left ear. If you hear commands from your left, it is me. Marcus will attend his post at your right ear. All you have to do is run like mad to the village and listen to our instructions."

As she ran past the blur of trees, she listened to the constant commands to duck, jump or hurdle obstacles that were meant to block her path. The hunters saw a shadow pass the encampment, but did not realize it was their intended target.

The village was in sight within a few minutes. Sabrina was not inhaling deeply, but she did need to compose herself before entering the village square The villagers would recognize the symbols of her leadership and want to celebrate. There was no time. The time for celebration would occur after the battle.
