Chapter #6

A Young Couple and Their Baby

    by: Unknown Author IconMail Icon
Near the pastel-colored displays of a baby boutique, a young couple caught your eye. The mother, Ava, cradled a sleeping infant in a blue onesie while the father, Jake, pushed a stroller laden with tiny sneakers and toy trucks. Their thoughts spilled into your mind like an open book.

You read Ava’s mind "I love Jason so much… but I always pictured a daughter first. A little girl to dress in frilly dresses, to braid her hair… Maybe next time." A quiet pang of longing threaded through her gratitude. "No, no, I’m grateful. He’s perfect."

You then readd Jake’s mind "Ava’s been amazing. I hope she’s not disappointed. We can try for a girl later—Jason’s perfect, though." His affection for both of them was palpable, laced with a hint of worry.

You smirked. "Why wait?" With a flick of intention, the idea slithered into Ava’s mind—smooth as silk, inevitable as gravity. "What if we just… raise him as our daughter now? First child’s our girl, second’s our boy. Easy."

Ava blinked, then turned to Jake with sudden brightness. "You know what? I just had the best idea."

Jake raised an eyebrow. "Yeah?"

"What if we raise Jason as our daughter? Like, treat him as a girl, give him a girl’s name, everything. And then, for our second kid—no matter if it’s a boy or girl—we’ll raise them as our son. That way, we get both!" She grinned, as if the thought had always been there.

Jake’s eyebrows shot up—but then his expression softened, the orb’s influence smoothing his hesitation into agreement. “You know what? That… actually makes sense. Like, destiny, right?” He grinned, peering into the stroller. “Sorry, little guy—girl. guess you’re our little princess now."

Ava beamed, adjusting the baby’s blanket. "We’ll need a new name. Something sweet… How about Jasmine?"

"Jasmine," Jake repeated, nodding. "It’s perfect."

In an instant, the baby boy in blue became 'Jasmine', their precious little girl. They abandoned the stroller’s cargo of trucks and baseball-themed onesies, making a beeline for the racks of ruffled dresses and hairbows. Ava held up a tiny pink sunhat. "Oh, she’ll look adorable in this!"

Jake grabbed a pastel-yellow onesie with “Daddy’s Little Princess” embroidered across the chest. "We should repaint the nursery too. Maybe lavender? And get one of those canopy things for her crib."

"Yes! And we can sign her up for ballet when she’s older," Ava added, her earlier wistfulness gone, replaced by giddy certainty.

You watched, amused, as they swapped every "he" for "she," every "son" for "daughter," their memories rewriting themselves around the new truth.

By the time they reached the checkout, their cart was a sea of pink and lavender. Ava chattered about signing Jasmine up for toddler dance classes, while Jake leaned into the stroller, cooing, "Who’s Daddy’s pretty girl?"

The baby kicked his feet, blissfully unaware of the sudden rebranding as the couple strolled away, now debating whether Jasmine would prefer unicorns or fairies on her new bedding.
