Chapter #7

Investigative Incident

    by: NotImmediately Author IconMail Icon
Was the ongoing incompetence of the police force simply doomed to go on forever?
Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth wore an expression of impatience as he crossed the dimly lit room once more -- something he'd already done dozens of times over in the day.
He was in the midst of a particularly noteworthy investigation, attempting to determine the cause of an esteemed young scientist's recent disappearance. He'd been brought on as soon as the investigation became serious. The reason that the public received was that foul play was suspected, though Edgeworth himself knew that it was simply because the police were struggling and hoped that his assistance might raise some new leads.
The scientist in question had been working through a lengthy experiment of some kind, which he'd kept video documentation of for the past few weeks. Edgeworth had reviewed the video footage several times already, though it was hard to pin down anything suspicious. The bespectacled young man in the videos simply rambled on about his work for a few tapes' worth of footage, until the final tape, during which he exited the video frame for some time, his voice suddenly breaking off without warning several seconds later.

Perhaps more frustrating was what the scientist failed to describe in his lengthy spiel. No one on the scene was quite certain of what the man's project was actually intended to do.
The closest was a recurring mention of something involving "size". Was it dietary research? Architectural engineering? No one was sure.
On his latest pass through the room to continue inspecting the mess of equipment that lined the small private lab, Edgeworth passed by the three people he most considered his current allies on the case.
Kay Faraday, the self-proclaimed master thief whose criminal record remained quite clean despite her purported career, homicide detective Dick Gumshoe, and Edgeworth's own adoptive sister, Franziska von Karma.
The three were all busy with their own roles in the search for any evidence, and none had really noticed Edgeworth passing by once more.
Nearly to his destination, Edgeworth stiffened up as he heard a rather strange noise.
Glancing toward the source, he caught a brief glimpse of a flashing light, but in that same moment, an unwelcome feeling struck him.

His vision went blurry, and he felt himself falling. He struggled to maintain his composure, but it was a wasted effort.

At the source of the noise and light, one of his three companions stood in a state of shock. They watched as the beam of light that had been emitted from the device they'd been inspecting struck Edgeworth in the chest. Instantly, the prosecutor's body seemed to distort in their vision.
He was shrinking.
And quite quickly, too. They fumbled to return the device to its spot on the work desk, but even as they did so, Edgeworth's body dwindled so far down in size that they could only guess him to be a few inches high at most.

Who accidentally activated the device?
