As Scott was dumping his backpack on the kitchen table, the doorbell rang. Opening the door, Amanda and Caley, Rae’s friends, were both standing there looking faintly nervous.
“Hi, Scott!” they both said at the same time, to their mutual embarrassment.
“Hi,” Scott said. “Listen, why don’t you both come to my room, so we can talk?”
As they walked into his room, their eyes were immediately drawn to the flask of blue liquid on his desk.
“Is that it?” Amanda asked. “Is that the serum that Rae was talking about?”
“Yes, it is, but…” Scott started.
“You have to give it to me, Scott. You don’t know what it’s like being 4’11”. I’ve been picked on and bullied and I have always, always, always wanted to be tall and beautiful. Please, Scott, please…” Amanda said in a rush.
Scott stood there, stunned by Amanda’s passionate plea. “Well, Amanda…” he began again.
“Scott,” Amanda interrupted. “You don’t know how I have felt as I watched everyone grow taller and curvier while Rae, Caley, and I never really did. We had resigned ourselves to miss out on homecoming, on prom, on dating, on anyone wanting us. When we saw what you did for Rae, it gave us something that we haven’t had for the last couple of years… hope!”
“Homecoming is coming up in a couple of weeks. I want to go with someone. I want to dress up. I want to be pretty. I want to be desired. Please, Scott. You don’t know what this means to us. To me.” Amanda implored.
