Chapter 3 - Diagonosis and Prognosis

Aimi came to and blinked to clear her vision.
The overhead fluorescent lights were dazzling.
Lights? She shivered again, and rubbed at
her eyes with her hands.

Aimi’s eyes snapped open.
She looked at her hand, then at her surroundings.
She was in a small, white-painted room
decorated with glass-door cabinets
and anatomical charts and pictures.
A thin white sheet was pulled over her.
She peered under the sheet and found
she was only dressed in a thin hospital gown.

"You’re awake," a voice said. She looked toward the voice and saw a man looking around the door frame.

"Hey, doc," he called. "She’s awake."

Aimi felt her throat.
Her memory was a blur but she remembered
feeling like she was choking on something
before she passed out and that something
strange had happened though she couldn’t
quite recall all the details.

Then a realization hit her as a woman
dressed in a sweatsuit and a white
doctor’s coat strode into the room.

"I’m Doctor Sparago," she began.
“You’re in the Gailton Medical Center.
Can you tell me your name?”

“I-I umm I’m not sure”

“I feared as much” sighed the doctor.

“Do you know your age or
remember anything at all”

“Umm I’m not sure. I think I’m 14 and
I vaguely remember choking and
being in pain then waking up here”

“As we feared. You have a mild concussion
but you also seem to have amnesia”

“Do you hurt still anywhere?”

“Yeah my head”

“That’s to be expected. You were quite lucky”

Aimi stared at her bare feet, visible
below the sheet covering her.
She couldn’t dismiss the feeling that
they looked different somehow.
Despite this amnesia she felt like something was
off and different about her body.

"May I come in?"
Lisa looked up a man no a teenager walk
into the room to the foot of her bed.

"You look better than the first time I saw you," he said.

Aimi wasn’t sure why but she blushed
taking it as a compliment. She also noted
how cute and handsome he was.

“Who are you?”

She noted his features Framed by straight
dark brown hair, his face was
regular save for a nose that looked just
one size too large. His brown eyes were
warm, sharp and intelligent.
His body was slim yet build in a shapeless
plaid shirt and chinos that bore the muddy
evidence of a recent mishap.

He looked like a geek or nerd had fused with
Prince Charming and a football jock.
He seemed only a few years older than herself.
He followed her eyes and looked down
at the dirt and stains on his clothes.

“Right this young lad here helped save you”
said the doctor
“If you ask me he’s a real fox. If it weren’t for
the age differences between you two I’d
totally suggest you date him after this ordeal”

They both blushed this time then he introduced
himself.
“I’m Michael. Michael Gail. Sorry that we aren’t
meeting under better circumstances”

“Anyway darling I’m afraid to say you were in a
terrible traffic accident”

He moved to shake her hand.
Aimi didn’t pull her hand out of his grasp.
His hands were large and warm,
like his eyes.
She found herself momentarily
forgetting the frightening experience
she had—how long ago was it? Or her current one.

She didn’t wanna admit it but there was something
about him even tho they had just met.

"What time is it?" she asked.

"It’s just after nine," Michael answered.
His voice was deep and musical.
She blinked and smiled again.

"Thank you for helping me," she said.
Michael nodded.

"You’re welcome. It’s not every day I get a
chance to help a pretty girl on the road."

Aimi looked at his hand holding hers,
then up at his face. His features were
handsome, his expression open and honest.
He was very attractive, she thought.

What was she thinking. He’s older, they just met
and despite that Baka’s compliment she knew
she wasn’t what boys would consider
“attractive”

She had a tomboyish streak!
She had a somewhat flat chest!
She had a few intact memories of things
like these facts and a glance at her body
backed that up.
It was an empty meaningless lie of a compliment.

"Ahem," Dr. Sparago suddenly said.
Both Aimi and Michael looked at her,
Michael releasing Aimi’s hand.
Both teens blushed again.

The doctor grinned briefly yet slyly at the
potential lovebirds then regained
professional composure.

"Well, you were lucky," the doctor said shortly.
"Good thing Romeo here found you and
got you here fast! Aside from your apparent
moderate case of amnesia
and the minor head injury I detect no other
injury. I don’t think you need to remain in
the hospital at present!”

Aimi. realized her clothes and belongings
were nowhere to be seen.

"Your clothes were a bit dirty," Sparago said,
anticipating her next question.
She gestured to Michael.

“Mr. Gail here has already spoken to
the police about the incident."

"I told them where it was," Michael added.
"They said they would come to see you
in the morning after you regained consciousness”

“You’ve been out for a few days.
It’s Tuesday in case you were wondering.
We imagine that someone might be looking for you
alas with your amnesia and the fact that the
truck you apparently were in
were on exploded and the occupants being tricky
to identify you and Mr Gail have a tricky road ahead”

Just then the Sheriff popped in.

“ Ah I see the patient is awake.
I’ll keep my promise to wait to talk to her but
seeing as she can’t remain in the hospital
and we have neither a shelter, orphanage or
Child Services nearby I think Mr Carter should take
care of her for now”

“Hey just because she’s cute doesn’t mean I
Know how to take care of a girl 3 years my junior!
Besides I was going to offer that anyway
for a day or 2 at my family’s vacation house”

That 3 years junior part was kind of
disappointing and shot Aimi back down
to reality real fast.

“You stupid jerk! I’m not gonna say thank you”
Lisa said with a pout that
Michael oddly found cute.

“ That’s fine but for that jerk comment
You can make your own breakfast in the morning”

“Ha the lovebirds already get along well.
I have a strange yet special feeling about you
two” said the doctor.

“Anyway without taking a jab at your size
or age deary aside from your injuries
if you haven’t already I suggest a follow up with
another doctor possibly a specialist.
You appear to be a bit on the petit side
and I’d be remiss
as a doctor if I weren’t concerned.
You may be strong willed, and an unusually quick
healer but that’s still a health concern.”

“Also I’ve detected some unusual hormone
levels in you that should probably be monitored”
said the doctor
