"You need to calm down, Joe." Serious, you said. "Strong emotions augment magic. You don't want to spark a permanent change over a temper tantrum."
"You promised me some answers, mom." Furious, Joe said. "You also promised to change me back after ballet practice."
"I did promise you answers and to change you back." Calmly, mom said. "However, I would prefer to answer your questions first."
"I'm waiting..." Again tapping one foot, Joe said.
Mom sighed. "All of the girls in this family are witches with the power of magic." Patiently, she explained. "However, only girls have this power. A boy born into a family like ours have magic within them but they must be turned into a girl to be able to use it."
"For you to even detect magic, it has to be used against you at least once." Chiming in, you said. "For you to gain a resistance to it, you will need to have it used against you for a time." You winced, adding, "How long depends upon the boy's will to fight the magic off."
"Why ballet?" His anger ebbing, Joe demanded.
"I was hoping it would spark your athletic interests." Serious, mom said. "However, I did not count on Ina and Tia trying to push you into staying on the ballet team longer than planned." Mom eyed the twin girls as she said that, making them cringe slightly.
"How long did you plan to keep me a girl, going to ballet?" Worried, Joe demanded.
"Just a few days." Honestly, mom replied. "It was more because of your father..." She stopped herself short then turned to you, hoping for some help.
"This was dad's idea?" Horrified, you asked.
"No; it was not his idea." Firmly, you said. "He had other plans for you."
Joe gulped, taking a step back. "What did he want to do with me?!" Hurt, he asked. "What did I do to deserve any of this?!"
"It's not what you think, sweetie." Gently, mom said. "You are a valued member of this family."
"Then change me back!" Tearing up, Joe wailed. "I had enough of being a little girl!"
"We still need one more ballerina for the recital!" Whining, Ina protested. "Joeanna has to give her decision to Miss Franz in person tomorrow!"
"Besides, I think Joe is way cuter as a little girl." Grinning, Tia added.
"You are not helping!" Hissing, you whispered.
Mom gave Joe a pained look. "I will change you back tomorrow after you tell Miss Franz you can't dance at the recital." Softly, she said. "After that..."
Joe did not wait for mom to finish. She ran off crying, slamming the door to her bedroom. Mom sighed, shaking her head then turned to Ina and Tia...
