Not due to any lack of hunger, if anything it was insistent he continue, but he had to pause momentarily due to a pain in his hooves. Big Mac couldn't see them so he was unaware of what was happening, but if anyone had been able to peer under his boulder sized gut which nearly hung to the ground, they would have been able to see his hooves crack and split, dividing into three pieces. There was no blood though as this was not some effect of his vast tonnage breaking parts of his own body. Instead the pieces separated and pushed out, the hard keratin changing from pieces of his hooves to actual claws adorning toes on a spreading foot.
Big Mac knew none of this though, he just knew his appendages ached too much to walk for the moment, but as it passed he continued on to the tree and bent a branch to his face to continue eating. However, this time rather than let the branch slide from his mouth, devoid of leaves and apples alike, Big Mac simply bit harder and broke off the entire branch in his mouth. The bark was dry and the wood chewy, but in the end it was just more food.
Another branch followed, the stallion unaware that with every bite his teeth changed to better pulp the wood he consumed, two of his teeth in his lower jaw began to grow, pushing up on either side of his muzzle as they protruded from his lips even when his mouth was closed. A pair of tiny 'tusks' beginning to form.
By the time Big Mac finished the tree it was virtually stripped down to the trunk. He did try to eat it, but it was too big around to get his jaw around and his insistent hunger demanded more food. So with some reluctance Big Mac moved on to the next tree.
It was about an hour later when Applejack and Twilight arrived at the same spot.
"Holy Horseapples!" Applejack exclaimed, "Look what he's done to our trees!"
"This is getting serious Applejack," Twilight replied, "Big Mac is getting out of control. And if what I've seen in town is any indication he might just be the first. No other stallion has it this bad but there's definitely some with similar characteristics."
"I'm just glad it has hit the foals yet," Applejack muttered though that was some small consolation.
"Twilight just nodded, "I've already written to Celestia, Hopefully she can send help, but with the Royal guard being seventy-eight percent stallions they might not be much help. Especially considering...." Twilight pointed down at the tracks showing the change from Big Macs deep hoofprints to the clawed toes.
"Sweet Celestia!" Applejack gaped, "What in tarnation is happening to my brother?"
"I'm not sure," Twilight replied, "I've never read about anything like this before."
"Well what are we going to do?" Applejack looked about ready to suffer a breakdown with a combination of desperation and fear for her brother.
"If we can get close to Big mac I'll hit him with a sleep spell," Twilight stated, "We can hopefully keep him under until we find an answer."
" 'Hopefully'?" Applejack echoed, questioning the doubt she'd heard in Twilight's voice.
"The spell is designed to work on ponies, but these tracks, those bite marks on the tree... I hate to say it Applejack, but your brother might not be entirely equine enough for it to work."
Applejack bit her lip, nervous. Still they had to try as the pair pushed on, following the trail of consumed trees.
Choice 1: They find Big Mac even more transformed and bigger, eating whole trees now. Twilight attempts the spell but it doesn't work, causing the giant of a fat stallion too change even further.
Choice 2: Same as 1 but the spell does work and Big Mac falls asleep for a time.
Choice 3. Somepony else, say Apple Bloom or Zecorra for example find Big Mac before Twilight and Applejack.
