“While we’re alone, I feel like I owe you an explanation,” she said, walking over and sitting right on the floor by your side. She lifted one paw over your shoulder as she got down to brass tacks. “Like I said, I’ve got some pretty bad Pokemon after me, so I can’t really trust anyone.” She muttered bitterly. “I know you probably have good intentions and all, but the problem is, how can I be sure you’re not working for ‘em? I mean, what would stop you from just killing me in my sleep?” She leaned in closer, whispering into your ear. “So… why don’t we try a little trust exercise?”
Did she really expect you to prove you weren’t some kind of assassin? You were baffled, but ultimately, curious what this ‘trust exercise’ could be. “Like what?”
“Hear me out. I can’t just sleep while you’re out here in the open. I’d be vulnerable,” she explained, slowly, as if she was picking her every word very carefully. This had the side effect of making her explanation sound… unnatural, like she wasn’t being genuine. “So I would appreciate it, as a gesture of goodwill, if you would spend the night… locked away some place safe.”
She brought your attention down to her stomach, and you remember something. You had heard plenty of tales of savage predators swallowing down their helpless prey… but you’d also heard of Pokemon temporarily storing the ones they love inside them, just to keep them safe. “... you don’t mean…?"
“Yes. Not for very long; just until tomorrow morning,” she said, patting her belly comfortably, “and I’ve done this plenty of times. I can guarantee you’d be completely unharmed,” she points to the door of the hut, “but if you don’t trust me, you can just leave. I won’t stop you.” You noticed something while briefly glancing at the door; it was locked. The Ninetales had no intention of actually letting you walk out of here. She was testing you.
“Can I… take a moment to think about this?” You ask, feeling lightheaded.
“Take as long as you need,” she nods, letting you lean up against her furry belly like a soft pillow as you contemplated the situation.
If you tried to just walk out, would she assume you were some kind of spy, heading out to inform the others of her location? Leaving was a dangerous option, but letting the fox do whatever she pleases was dangerous, too. She was a wild Pokemon, after all. You never knew if this was all some sort of trick to get a midnight snack. You at least attempted to talk your way out of this. “I mean… I-I’m not here to hurt you or a-anything…”
“I know. I just want you to prove it to me,” she says reassuringly, licking over your head a few times while you contemplating, covering your forehead with saliva. Maybe she was planning on eating and digesting you no matter what you did. Or maybe… she really was telling the truth. I mean, if she was just going to digest you, she would’ve pounced on you the moment the two of you were alone. Then again, if she was telling the truth, why did she lock the door when you weren’t looking? As you thought up all the possibilities, you determined that the best response was to just… obey the fox, and hope she has mercy on you.
“O-okay… if it doesn’t hurt,” you nod, finally managing to force the words out of your mouth.
“Thank you, absol. I promise, I’ll be very gentle…” she smiled, but despite her reassurances, you were almost dizzy with fear. She frowns, seeing the look on your face. “If you’re nervous, I’d recommend you just lie down, close your eyes, and relax.” You do as she said, lying down on your back on the comfortable nest, trying to still your beating heart. Eventually, though, just as you were calming down, you hear the floorboards crack as the ninetales repositioned herself. You couldn’t help but take a peek, half-opening one of your eyes only to find yourself staring straight at...
