Chapter #5

A Spin on Mystery Food X We Haven't Done Yet

    by: Silverhammer Author IconMail Icon
"Uggggh..." Yosuke groaned as he slumped over. His groan was punctuated by a dull thud as his head smacked into the picnic table. "This is the lamest camping trip. I can't believe Morooka's just making us clean garbage!"

"It does feel more like a punishment than a school trip," Yu agreed as he worked the kinks out of his shoulder. "Honestly, even if we were here for fun, these woods aren't exactly scenic."

"Someone threw away a whole bicycle!" Yosuke griped. "Who does that?!"

Both of their stomachs growled. The day's events had caused them to work up quite an appetite.

"On the bright side, the girls are cooking for us!" Yosuke said with a mildly lecherous grin. "Did you hear Chie earlier? She said they were making it with 'love!' This is gonna be awesome."

Yu hummed noncommittally. Based on what he overheard Yukiko and Chie planning to buy when they shopped for ingredients at Junes, he wasn't expecting them to create "curry" so much as "Poseidon's chocolate and squid ink soaked nightmares." He saw no reason to deprive Yosuke of his hopes, however.

"Speaking of Chie, did she seem off to you today?" Yu asked. "It seems like she ran out of energy unusually quickly."

"Well, I don't think she's any happier to be here than we are," Yosuke noted. "Though now that you mention it, she did get bit by more mosquitoes than any of us..."

"I hope she's not sick," Yu said as he looked over towards Chie and Yukiko. The two were huddled over the cooking stations, though Chie seemed to be somewhat listless, with Yukiko doing most of the work.

"Hey, maybe if she is, we'll have to escort her off the mountain and we get to leave early," Yosuke said with a shrug. He frowned as he remembered a certain conversation he and Yu had a month prior, when they were investigating Kanji. "Hey, Partner?"

"Hmm?"

"If Chie and Yukiko catch you looking at them, they might get the wrong idea..."

"Oh! Yeah, good point..." Yu quickly turned in his seat and faced away from the cooking stations before Yukiko could turn around and catch his gaze.

---

"Do you think Yu-kun likes one of us? He keeps looking over here."

"He's probably just hungry, Yukiko. Let's hurry and..." Chie blinked rapidly as a sudden dizzy spell came over her. "...whoa..."

"Chie? Are you alright?"

"I'm fine, Yukiko..." Chie made an effort to stand up straighter, only to wobble slightly. Her best friend frowned in response.

"Chie, if you're not feeling well, go tell Morooka-sensei. You got bitten the most when we ran into that swarm of mosquitoes, didn't you? If you got sick from that, it could be serious."

"I did," Chie rolled her eyes. "He accused me of trying to milk sympathy from him and trying to 'have unprotected sex with those depraved city boys.' I think he was already drunk."

Yukiko pursed her lips. "That's not as surprising as it should be. At least go lie down in the tent. I can handle things here and I'm sure the boys will understand."

Chie shook her head, the motion making her somewhat light headed. "No... really, Yukiko, it's fine. Let's just get to work."

"Alright," Yukiko reluctantly nodded. "Why don't you get started chopping the vegetables, and I'll go get the rest of the ingredients."

Chie nodded, and Yukiko walked away towards the ingredients station. Chie picked up the knife, sliced it into the first onion, and then immediately passed out.

---

"Ugh..."

Chie staggered to her feet. She wasn't sure what happened, but on the plus side, her dizziness seemed to be gone.

"What happened... Yukiko?"

She looked around. Not only was Yukiko nowhere to be seen, but she was surrounded by strange white hills. She took a breath, only to immediately start coughing as a powerful stench filled her nostrils and lungs and brought tears to her eyes.

"Wh-what is this?!" Chie gagged. "It smells like... onions..."

Chie's eyes widened as she looked at the hills more closely. Against all odds, she was surrounded by giant onions.

It was then that she noticed the noise surrounding her. It sounded like distant thunder at first, but now that she concentrated on it, it sounded like... people talking? Running through a gap between the onions, she came upon a terrifying, impossible sight. All around her, impossibly-sized behemoths in Yasogami gym uniforms moved to and fro, talking amongst themselves as they prepared dinner for their groups.

Chie was on the countertop. And she was the size of a mosquito.

A shadow loomed over her.

"Chie?" an echoing voice boomed from above. "Where did you go?"

Chie slowly turned around, and almost began to hyperventilate as she took in the absolutely gigantic form of Yukiko, who obliviously scanned the campground for her friend, her arms full of curry ingredients.

"Yukiko!" Chie called up to her. "Down here!" Unfortunately, her tiny voice couldn't help to compete for Yukiko's attention with the mindless chatter of the rest of their class.

"Hmm... she must have taken my advice and gone to the tent early," Yukiko wrongly determined. "Thank goodness." With that, she started to set the ingredients down right where Chie was standing.

"Yukiko, stop!" Chie cried as she ran to dodge the avalanche of food. She barely avoided being crushed as Yukiko emptied her load haphazardly onto the counter.

"Hmm..." Yukiko mused as she surveyed the ingredients. "I guess it's up to me. Although, it occurs to me now that I never actually learned to make curry. Chie was the one with the recipe. Oh well, I'll figure it out..."

"YUKIKO!" Chie called out even louder, waving her hands for good measure now that Yukiko was actually looking in her direction. "HELP ME!"
