Heres one potential scenario:

A scientist testing out genetic experiments to create a new pet, designed to be incredibly clean and allergy friendly, as well as being quite fat and cute, but one day you accidentally disable the growth inhibitor gene on one or more test subjects while attempting to engineer human-level intelligence, leading to an army of ever-growing fuzzy friends who are more than happy to spread big ratty hugs.
