"Um, well..." Holly stuttered, knowing she had done something to earn the ire of the tiny boy in her arms.
"What? Come on Holly, tell me!" The fire-haired girl approached, causing Alex to shrink into Holly for protection.
"W-well..." His current ward turned to the side, looking up as she thought up of a good lie. "It's because... W-well, because, you know...." She continued to stall as she kept him facing away from Melanie as the girl crowded Holly.
"C'mon, tell me! Please, we're friends!" She begged. Alex looked up at Holly, silently screaming at her not to tell her about the size ray. The look he received caused his heart to sink, but not because she was going to spill her- or more his guts.
"It's because... We like each other so much!" Alex would have slapped his forehead if his arms weren't being held at his side.
Melanie was quiet, there was no way she bought that. Holly must have been thinking the same thing, as she turned around and began to speak.
"I'm telling the-"
"...Because you like him?" Melanie's face told all- she was completely convinced! As for what this would mean for the shrunken teen though, he had yet to find out. "So... If I liked him too, he'd shrink even more?"
"Oh? Um, well... I..." The girl's gears turned, heedless of Alex's frantic signals to get her attention. To his dismay, she ran with her idea. "Well, yeah. If you're nice, really really nice, then he might shrink more!"
Alex wasn't sure if Holly knew, but the gaze he received was anything but nice. More likely she was planning him to shrink to the size of a bug or smaller and smash him to paste. "I'm sorry Alex." She said in a perfunctory manner. Thankfully even Holly wasn't convinced.
"Um... Not quite like that. I mean more like, liking him, like-like. Like, you know, k-kisses and stuff." She stuttered with a blush at the word kiss, but Alex heaved a barely-concealed sigh. There was no way Melanie would go for that... Right?
