Chapter #4

His mother, Martha

    by: SomethingNew Author IconMail Icon
"BILL ELIAS STRASSERMAN!" A mature female voice cried out.

Bill sighed. Great. Just what he needed. His mother, Martha Candor-Strasserman.

Martha had been getting on Bill's case quite a lot recently. Maybe she was stressed about Bill going to college soon. Maybe she was stressed about his sister's grades. Maybe something was going on at work. Or maybe Martha was just being Martha. But whatever the case was, Bill and his mother had seemingly been finding themselves in arguments more often than not. And this time, it was no exception.

"What is it now, mom?" Bill said, exasperatedly.

"How many times am I going to have to tell you to clean up after yourself? When your done with your dishes, put them in the sink! You can't just leave them on the table like that!" Martha scolded.

"Well, I was running late. Tom's gonna be here any minute..." Bill started.

"Well, if you got up on time, you wouldn't have to be rushing, would you? Or if you actually cleaned your room, you wouldn't have to scrounge through piles of dirty clothes just to find something acceptable to wear?" Martha continued.

"Mom, can we not..." Bill tried to begin.

"Do you think you're going to get away with this in college? Do you think this is an appropriate way to get through life! You can't just... what's that in your hand?" Martha suddenly said.

"No...nothing." Bill said.

"That's not nothing Show me." Martha said. Bill sighed again, and showed her the gem. Martha snatched it from his hand.

"Where. did. you. get. that? Bill are you..stealing?" Martha said incredulously.

"NO! I just found this. I..." Bill started.

"And you weren't going to tell anyone? You weren't going to tell me?" Martha asked.

"I JUST FOUND IT! I didn't even think about what to do!" Bill tried to explain.

"Don't you lie to me, young man." Martha said, inspecting the stone.

"I'm not! I wasn't! Will you just listen to me?" Bill asked.

"Listen, Bill, you need to mature! You need to figure things out or college is going to eat you alive! I can't believe you found this and didn't come to me! What if this was mine? What if you had taken it to school and it got stolen! Seriously Bill..."
