“I wish that Gloria actually cared about me!”

“I wish that Gloria actually cared about me!” Tom shouted. “If she did, I wouldn’t have so many problems!”

Part of Bill sympathized with his friend. Tom was in a horrible place, cast out by his peers and driven into a deep depression. He understood Tom’s anger and desperation, his need to be loved again. But another, more rational part of Bill knew that anything that made a gemstone glow brighter than the sun was bad news. As the light grew and grew until it blinded Bill, he knew that all he could do was let whatever happened happen.

The light died, as though someone had flicked its off switch. Bill blinked a few times, the echo of the stone’s power still in his eyes, and took in his surroundings. He was back on his porch, looking out at the rising sun and the neighborhood it shone on. Bill scrambled to look at his watch. It was 7:42, as it had been the last time he checked. Somehow, the stone had sent him and Tom back in time.

Before Bill could process this impossible development, he heard two voices cry out at the same time, “HEY BILL!” He whipped his head towards the sound, and saw Tom side by side with who he could only assume was Gloria Vanapolous. A wild branch blocked Bill’s view of her gorgeous face. In the split second before she came into view, Bill had a terrible thought. What if the Stone, in some bid to make Gloria care for Tom, had changed her physical features?
