At first, nothing happened, and Bill wondered if he and Tom had just made fools of themselves. Of course the stone wouldn’t grant a wish, no matter how much it glowed. Then a flash of black overtook Bill’s vision, so fast it could be mistaken for blinking. If he hadn’t somehow been teleported to his front porch steps, he just might have.
Bill scrambled back of the steps, understandably freaking out, until his back hit his front door. He glanced back and forth, taking in his familiar surroundings. The stone must really have been magic, Bill thought. He was amazed by the power for all of a second, before his thoughts turned to Tom. Bill was familiar with stories of genies and wishes gone wrong, and if they had any basis in reality, Tom was in for a shock. Or not, Bill thought as he realized how Tom’s wish may have been interpreted. He wanted to stop caring about Gloria, but what if the stone twisted the wish to make him stop caring altogether?
A droll, “Hey, Bill,” coming from around the bend seemed to confirm his fears. Bill rushed to the sidewalk, anxious to see what the wish had done to his best friend.
