Chapter #5Liam by: Unknown It was a lazy Friday afternoon at Wilko's. More specifically, Liam was having a lazy afternoon. Every other staff member was running around like chickens with their heads cut off, but not Liam. Of course he managed to somehow look busy, which was his main skill in life, but he'd managed to avoid doing any actual work since his shift had begun.
His luck didn't last. Rounding a corner while walking briskly (to seem like he had a destination in mind), Liam nearly walked face-first into Liz, who was trying to pacify some irate customers, a middle-aged woman and her teenage children.
"No, ma'am, we usually don't," Liz was saying. "But just to make doubly sure, I'll send someone to check. Ah! Liam!" she added, just as Liam tried walking past. Liam winced, but stopped and turned around. "Liam, you remember those Bluetooth speakers we had a display of a few weeks ago? These customers have misplaced their remote and would like us to check whether we have any spares in the back. Would you please check?"
Liam lifted his eyebrows. He and Liz both knew that he wouldn't find one, but he'd be expected to spend some time symbolically searching the storage room, since customers never believed you until you checked that magic place called "The Back." Liam nodded. "Sure, I'll check and let you know."
At least it wasn't a big job. He walked to storage, then to the place they'd stored the speakers. None were left, as he knew would be the case. He sat down on a nearby box, preparing to wait there a few minutes before he went back to tell the customers the "bad news."
He looked around idly, then froze. On the floor below the shelves where the speakers had been, he saw a red light flashing. That was unusual. Going down on his knees, he peered under the shelf and saw a remote. He took it out from under the shelf and frowned. Didn't look like a speaker remote. Didn't look familiar at all. He examined it more closely, and his frown deepened. This was a very strange remote.
Across the top was written: "Super Head Swap," with presumably the same written beneath it in what looked like Chinese. A big red button near the bottom was labeled "SWAP!" Beneath the many other small black buttons on its face were labels such as "Awareness," "Clothing," "Voice," and some others. Very odd. Liam took it and slipped it into his pocket, then went back out to the waiting customers.
"Sorry, we're all out. No speaker remotes to be seen. You might want to try writing the manufacturer," he added, seeing the mother of the family getting even angrier.
"That's what your supervisor said! I don't have time for this!" she shouted, as she stomped away. "Useless!" she yelled over her shoulder.
Liam, remembering the remote in his pocket...
