Chapter #8

Mowgli, Ranjan, and the Beanstalk

    by: Unknown
At that point, the jungle two boys came across a giant beanstalk that looked as if it reached all the way to the clouds. Mowgli wanted to gather a few of its beans to bring back to the Man Village, but Ranjan had other ideas. He wanted to see what was at the top of the beanstalk, so he began to climb up it. Mowgli saw this, and not wanting to be held responsible for anything bad that happened to his younger brother, followed him up the beanstalk. It was a long climb up the beanstalk, and since neither of them had any parachutes on them, just the loincloths on their butts, one wrong move could mean a nasty fall. The two jungle boys climbed for what felt like hours, and were soon miles above India. It was a miracle that neither one of them fell. At last, they had reached the top. In the distance, they saw a very big castle.

I wonder who lives there... Mowgli thought to himself. The two jungle boys were hungry, especially because they had been spending the day climbing the beanstalk. They reached a moat surrounding the castle, but Ranjan wasn't going to let that stop him. He wanted to run though the moat, but before he got far, Mowgli grabbed him by the back of his loincloth and held him back.

"Hold on, Ranjan. You can't swim, remember?" Mowgli told Ranjan.

"Drat!" Ranjan said unhappily.

"If old Papa Bear were here, we could ride him across the river." Mowgli told Ranjan. Indeed, riding across a floating Baloo would help them get across the moat, but Baloo was still back down in the jungle.

"Yeah. Too bad he doesn't know about this beanstalk." Ranjan told Mowgli. Suddenly, Mowgli saw an empty pea pod that looked like he and Ranjan could ride.

"I've got an idea. Help me move this pea pod into the water." Mowgli told Ranjan.

"Okay." Ranjan said, and he helped Mowgli push the pea pod into the water. The two climbed aboard the pea pod and sailed it across the water, dodging giant mosquitoes that lunged down at them, and being splashed by a giant fish, who washed their pea pod boat up near the entrance to the castle. The two jungle boys stared up at the size of the door. Ranjan ran through the narrow crack, while Mowgli, who was taller, had to crawl to pass through. The huge gloomy castle hall looked dark and quiet. Just then, Ranjan ran up the spiral path of a table leg. Mowgli followed behind him, and when the two jungle boys reached the top of the table, there was a feast fit for a giant. It looked like enough food to feed the entire Man Village for over a year. While Ranjan was intent on eating the food right away, Mowgli was torn between his responsibility of bringing the food back and his desire to join Ranjan in eating the food.

Does Mowgli focus on his responsibility, or does he join Ranjan in eating?
