“Wait!” Liza said.
You stopped mid-wave. “Huh? What is it?”
“Well, I want to make sure it’s actually safe for you out there. I mean, it must be really dangerous for someone tiny like you. It doesn’t feel right to learn about your problem, and then just... let you wander off. I want to make sure your Pokemon can really protect you.” She smirked and added, “Also, you did say you were confident your team could beat mine...”
“Wait, are you saying you want to have a Pokemon battle with me?” you asked.
“Yep,” Liza replied. “I mean, I am a Gym Leader. It’s what I do! You came here to get my badge, right? So if you battle me, you can earn your badge, and I can test your strength so I know you’ll be safe out there.”
“Sure!” you said, smiling. “I was hoping to battle you! I brought a Crawdaunt and Banette just for this fight. Let’s go!”
Liza laughed. “Great! I’m looking forward to seeing your team. Can I pick you up? I’ll take you to the arena.”
You nodded. You trusted Liza—she was clearly very nice and helpful, and you were fine with being held by her. She reached out and gently wrapped her fingers around you, then got up off the floor and stood up. Holding you close to her chest, she began to walk. You were shaken a bit, but not too much. It actually felt nice and comfy in her hand, and you relaxed, taking the chance to consider a strategy for beating the Gym Leader.
As Liza headed out into the main room, she gasped. “W-what?” she stammered. “What happened to the door!?”
You gulped. “Oh, uh... sorry. I had to get in somehow, so... my Crawdaunt broke the door.”
Liza sighed. “Well, I guess I can forgive you. You’re in a really difficult situation, after all. But couldn’t you have asked your Pokemon to just... open the door normally?”
“Well, I actually asked him to open the door,” you said. “He just decided to break it down instead.”
“Sounds like your Pokemon aren’t too well-behaved,” the girl murmured. “That could be an issue.”
You had to admit Liza was right—partially regarding Crawdaunt, but especially regarding your Banette. She was very mischievous, so you didn’t want to be forced to send her out while you were still tiny. But she was one of your only two Pokemon right now, until you could find a PC and rearrange your team. You planned to use Crawdaunt first while fighting Liza, but if he was defeated and you had no choice but to release Banette... you might just forfeit.
By now, Liza had carried you to one end of the battlefield, and set you down on the floor. She then hurried over to a machine on the wall and did something with it. It dispensed two Poke Balls, and she then went over to the opposite side of the arena.
“I’ll use two Pokemon,” she said. “Since you have two as well. Ready?”
“Ready!” you shouted back, hoping your tiny voice would reach Liza.
The young Gym Leader nodded. You released Crawdaunt. He looked back at his tiny trainer. You pointed at Liza, and your Pokemon hissed and took on a battle stance, ready to fight. Liza then threw out her first Pokemon.
