"A-alright, I think we should try the...Wait" Eugene was about to make his selection with the machine buzzed softly and more choices began scrolling across the primitive screen in a very 'But wait, there's more!' feeling.
"What's up Geno?" Peter asked from the couch.
"It's, uh, giving us more options to choose from. Looks like there's an option for an 'outdoors' simulation or a 'music' simulation...And it looks like if I type the number 3 it'll list off even more stuff." Eugene neglected to mention the little voice in side his head telling him that maybe this 'U' person was still around, despite how old the game machine looked. Maybe there was some kind of wireless card inside? The game HAD said that it could be connected to a computer, maybe even the Internet in order to download new game types...But that notecard had been crisp and clearly new. It wasn't just a relic from the 80s or whenever, some programmer speaking to another in the days where instant communication was impossible.
He suddenly had a hard time remembering if he'd caught the girl's name that had been at the shop in the mall. Had it started with a 'U'? That didn't seem right...But the longer they messed with the machine, the more of a not-quite-right feeling was growing inside of Eugene.
"Ooooh" Lindsey cooed, her blue eyes lighting up at the new modes, "Music sounds REALLY fun! Maybe it's, like, karaoke or something! I totally did that at a Japanese bar when I went on my honors trip to Japan last year in high school. It was so much, like fun! And those Japanese guys get REALLY into it! But me an' Bethany TOTALLY won with our duet! I got a little trophy and everything up in my room!"
"You went to Japan? On an honors trip?" Peter said, coughing a bit as the sip from Judy's iced tea caught in his throat in surprise. This was quickly followed up by a soft elbow to the side from Judy, who was giving him a look. "I mean, uh, that just sounds really, uh, expensive! Yeah, expensive"
Lindsey didn't seem to mind, or perhaps notice, the gaff, "Yeah! Like Honors Club wanted to do something different than just flying to DC, right? So we convinced the teachers to, like, let us fly to Japan! 'Course we all had to get jobs on top of doing all the fundraising since yeah it was, like, SUPER pricey! But SO totally worth it! Tokyo was a blast! We should totally go before we graduate! I know, like, all the best shops!"
The group was still blown away by the revelation, Peter especially. The learned jock had tried to steer away from 'labeling' others, given he worked hard to make people see him as something other than just a dumb jock on a scholarship run, but Lindsey either was putting on a enormous 'innocent dumb blonde' act or really was like the chick from the old Legally Blonde movie and just didn't realize how much like a bimbo she often sounded. Even if she did lack the normal 'bimbo curves' on her stickish frame.
"Music COULD be cool, I used to sing back chur-uh, back in high school" Judy offered, partially regretting the potential questioning into her past and the bad memories it would dredge up...But on the other hand, a karaoke night just between the four of them could be a lot of fun.
"Oh oh, yeah! I would LOVE to hear you sing, Judy!" Lindsey squealed in delight, "Oh, maybe WE could do a duet! Like OMG, this is gonna be SO much fun!" The chipper and seemingly always perky blonde jumped to her feet and was practically bouncing around the common room.
"Yeah, Judy DOES have great, uh, pipes. She's ALL the time singing those high notes after playing my...organ" Peter chuckled, and received a soft ribbing in reply from his top-heavy girlfriend for the innuendo. In truth Judy really was a fantastic singer, though he knew that she actually used to be in a church choir instead of singing in high school. Judy never spoke of her childhood much, but being the boyfriend, Peter was somewhat more privvy to her backstory than the two Freshmen students were. She didn't like talking about it, and every time she, Judy usually ended up a tear-stained anxiety ridden mess and he'd spend the rest of the evening comforting her or she'd just storm off back to her room...Or ask him to leave to go back to his. But she seemed in good spirits about this, so in true supporting boyfriend form, he was backing her up.
"Three against one Genie!" Lindsey said making an energetic half-circle around Eugene's chair and ruffling his short brown locks, causing him to blush.
"Y-yeah. Uh, yeah. Music s-sounds cool. Just, uh, d-don't make fun of me okay? I'm not really that good of a singer" He mumbled as he tried not to be overwhelmed by the perky blonde who was now setting her entire grinning head on his knee. He was also desperately trying to ignore the growing stiffness in his pants. That's ruin the mood entirely if a boner flopped up and poked Lindsey in the eye. He was lucky enough the rainbow haired girl was talking to him at all!
"Yay! And don't worry Genie, I've, like, heard way worse. Like Billie Eillish? Ugh, PUKE!" The girl made a gagging motion with her mouth as she pushed away from the geek's leg.
"Okay, karaoke night it is! Get us started Geno!" Peter leaned farther back on the couch and felt Judy snuggle in closer next to him.
The overweight freshman nodded and typed in the information onto the keyboard and pressed enter.
"MUSIC SIMULATION SELECTED. PLEASE INPUT GAME MODE" The game called out, and two large black buttons with the words 'Traditional' and 'Immersive' on them popped out of the top of the game.
"Ooh, I wonder what that does!" Lindsey crowded in on the device, her blue eyes wide with curiosity as she stared at the chipped white stenciling on the 'Immersive' button. She really wanted to push it...But all four of them were playing together, it would be, like, rude of her to just pick what she wanted to do.
After a brief moment of discussion, the four friends decided on playing the game in... indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
