One of Eugene's favorite all time movies was the 1998 movie Pleasantvillle.. That was because he could identify with the plight of David. Eugene would often find himself getting lost in some of the black and white shows shown on the retro cable channels, escaping the hardships that had befallen on his family not long after his twelfth birthday.
So if Lindsey was right, and the numbers the game had presented were decades, he wished it had shown a five or six as number choices.
But if five or six weren't available, then if the numbers represented decades, eight was going to be Eugene's go to choice, because of shows like MacGyver and Quantum Leap. Especially MacGyver. Eugene loved a show where the hero thought his way out of a situation, and invented solutions as needed. That's what Eugene wanted to do with is life: become the guy who people came to, when it was gray matter that was the most important, not muscle.
Eugene was surprised that there was absolutely no argument about choosing the number eight. Apparently, the rest of his friends all had their favorites from the 1980s.
And, Eugene reasoned, if choosing eight wasn't the 1980s, they could just restart the game and make a different choice. With that thought in mind, Eugene typed in '8.'
