Outside of a spaceship

    by: SWLatina Author IconMail Icon
Eugene blinked his eyes and found himself looking at his own reflection in the mirror above the sink in his dorm room. It was as that moment he realized he had been dreaming the whole thing. Buying the game, turning it on, picking options with his friends...everything.

And obviously at some point in the dream, he had sleepwalked and ended up standing in front of the sink.

Rubbing his face, Eugene was just happy he hadn't woken up by walking into the sink.

Eugene suddenly froze, startled by the face looking back at him. The face both belonged to him and didn't belong to him.

Eugene had only just started growing facial hair recently, and really only needed to shave every few days. He was religious about doing so, however, as his facial hair was spotty at best, only showing up in certain places.

The face looking back at him, though, looked as if it hadn't shaved in a couple of days, and if left unchecked, would grow a full beard.

That wasn't the only change.

When Eugene lifted his shirt, it felt like the scene in the first Spiderman movie with Tobey Maguire, where Peter Parker lifts his shirt the first morning after being bitten by the radioactive spider. Eugene's flabby torso and small potbelly had disappeared., replaced with a male gymnast's body.

Eugene looked around and found he wasn't in his dorm room. Well, the room looked like his room, but it wasn't. Eugene's real room was meant for double occupancy, and Eugene only had it to himself because of the pandemic. This room was definitely a single. The sink was in its own little alcove, and had been joined by a toilet and an enclosed shower.

All of Eugene's stuff was still in the room, but there were other things there as well.

Sitting on his desk was an old style coffee can, the inside bottom of which was barely covered with a handful of coins. Next to the can was a plastic cover with holes uniformly cut into it. Next to that was an old style ledger book that looked to be a hundred years old. There was also a model spaceship on the desk, and it took Eugene a few seconds to recognize it:

It was the Spindrift, the spaceship from the show Land of the Giants, from the late sixties/early seventies. Eugene only knew the show because at the last Comicon he went to, there was a booth with a couple of guys who were trying to crowdfund a remake of the show on Youtube. Eugene had hunted down the show on the internet, watched a couple of episodes, and sent in five dollars.

To the best of his knowledge, the whole project was still in the "pre-production" phase.

There were also three very realistic looking action figures on the desk, all about six inches high. Two of them were characters from Land of the Giants: one of them the actress or celebrity or heiress or something, the other one the fat middle-aged confidence man. Eugene didn't really remember the show that well:

The third action figure was an Orion slave girl from Star Trek:

For some reason, the third action figure confounded Eugene more than all the other changes to his dorm room. Eugene had action figures at his home (he was smart enough not to bring them with him to college) of different genres, but he kept them all within their own category. He didn't have any Land of the Giants stuff, but if he did, he would have kept it all together and seperate. He certainly wouldn't mix in any of his Star Trek stuff with it.

And if Eugene did mix them all together, he would have kept things separated by era. The original Star Trek did broadcast about the same time as Land of the Giants, and the animated series came on a few years later, but the Orion Slave Girl action figure was from the Enterprise series, Season Four. So no way would he keep all three of those action figures together.

Eugene was about to see what else was different in this world he found himself in, when something even weirder happened. The action figures were jumping up and down, trying to get his attention.

Even weirder, when he got closer, he found he could hear their voices as if they were full sized. There was nothing tiny or tinny about them.

Eugene listen in shocked wonder as he discovered the tiny action figures weren't action figures at all, but were tiny people. Very tiny specific people, in fact. They were his friends!

(Writer's note: Though none of the four players in the immersive game know it, Pete is in the body of Alexander B, Fitzhugh, and Lindsey is in the body of Valerie Scott, both characters on the show Land of the Giants. The slave girl pictured was never named in the Enterprise episode "Bound," but non-canonical sources list her name as Neras. Judy is in her body.)

The fat, older guy was Pete, the hot young redhead was Lindsey, and the hot green woman was Judy.

After talking to them, Eugene discovered that they had all "woken up" at about the same time as Eugene had. Well, maybe a few minutes earlier. They had had a chance to sort out who was who, and were about to go explore the insides of the spaceship (which looked full sized to them) when Eugene walked into the room.

"And it was pretty easy to figure out who you were," Judy laughed. "It was like seeing a Eugene billboard. But I have to admit, you look good, stud!" Lindsey nodded in agreement.

Judy, Lindsey and Pete had also had time to deduce they were somehow in the game.

"Well, I mean we must be in the game," Eugene agreed. "And most of this could be a seventies TV science fiction show. Except for Judy's character. She's a depiction of a character from a show thirty years later."

"Yeah, but the concept of the Orion Slave Girl originated earlier," Lindsey countered.

"But it was in a show that was completely in the sixties," Eugene argued. "And I thought if we picked seven, it would be shows from the seventies."

Pete interrupted Eugene and Lindsey before they got completely syfy geeky on him. But Pete wasn't happy to begin with. Lindsey and Judy were both happy with the bodies they appeared in. Judy especially liked being totally green.

Pete did not enjoy being this potbellied old guy. It was even worse that not only had Eugene got to keep his own body, but it was one that twelve times the height of Pete, and was an upgraded version as well.

"I don't really care if everything is consistent or whatever," Pete groused. "I just want out of this stupid game. How are we going to do that?"
