Talking to Sandi

    by: Absolfusion Author IconMail Icon
Sandi was giving him inquisitive looks, waiting for Tyler to speak.
Alright, here goes nothing, or I end up as giraffe chow. Tyler thought to himself.
"Y'know Sandi, I couldn't help but notice how, uh, long your neck is. It's so very graceful, like a swan's, and uh, your neck patterns are very pretty."
"Oh!" The giraffe lady retracted her tongue, arched down to meet Tyler's eyes, and then batted her eyelashes. "Well, thank you! I get looks from the humans all day because of my neck, but I don't think any one of them has ever complimented me like that before. In fact, it's usually, it's the opposite."

"The opposite?" Tyler furrowed his eyebrows. "You mean they come up and insult you?"
Sandi folded her ears and vigorously shook her head against her head, the movement of which sent waves along her neck. "Not with words per se. It's usually through subtle stuff like expressions and stuff like that. They don't realize it but I can be very perceptive to that kind of thing. Sometimes the guests come up and throw trash like cigarettes and beer bottles in the enclosure when the staff aren't looking, as if they think I'm so worthless that I don't even deserve the dignity of a clean home. The staff always come in and clean up after them, of course, bless their hearts, but it still stings that I get treated in such a way. I have feelings too, you know!"
As she spoke tears began to run from the corners of her eyes and collected like raindrops on her eyelashes.

Before tonight Tyler would never have expected that he would play therapist to an anthro giraffe before he sneaked into the zoo. He never imagined that he would meet an anthro giraffe before tonight. He reached up and gave Sandi's neck a reassuring pat. "So what you're saying is that it's more like a lack of respect than outright insults. That you're slighted that they toss trash at you and are unable to appreciate the beauty that's right in front of them."
Sandi sniffed and nodded. "Yeah, that's right."
"That's terrible!" Tyler blurted out.
"I know, right? If I had the chance I would totally eat all of them and turn them into a pile of poop just to see how they like it. Show them what trash really looks like. That's taboo to do during the day, of course. It's one of the big rules we're not allowed to break. Anyone who wanders in after closing hours though is fair game."

That was what Tyler was afraid of. Sandi's frustration with humans was so strong that she considered taking out her anger on them by eating them, and here was lying smack dab in the middle of her boobs like a sandwich on a dinner plate.
He gulped audibly and pulled at the corner of his collar to vent his chest to the open air. He coughed into his hand and "Okay, um... that's very interesting. You wouldn't try to eat me, would you?"
