Chapter #13

Go on to Yumi's

    by: Seuzz Author IconMail Icon
The Saito's front door is answered by a tall, well-built Japanese guy in track pants and a tank top, who you recognize as her older brother: a scary dude you steered clear of when he was a senior at Westside and you were a freshman. You feel Caleb flinch too.

"Is Yumi home," your friend blurts out. His voice is squeaky and, even worse, her name comes out as "Yummy."

"Maybe," her brother says in a dead voice. "And who are you jackasses?"

"We're just friends from school," you say. "Er, you're Morita, right? Nice to see you again."

His dark, implacable gaze switches to you. "It's Mokichi," he says. "Pat Morita was the old guy in 'Karate Kid.' Do I look like I know karate?"

Neither "yes" nor "no" would be a good answer, you sense. You're saved from a terrible choice by Yumi's voice. "Is that Lin? Tell her I'll be down in a minute."

Mokichi shouts something back in Japanese without taking his gaze from you. There's the sound of running footsteps, and Yumi appears behind him. Her face shows surprise, and then she smiles. She says something in Japanese to Mokichi and jabs him in the ribs with her elbow as she steps around him.

"Ignore him," she tells you sweetly. "He only thinks he's Godzilla or something." Mokichi glares one last time at you and Caleb and disappears into the house. "So what's up?" Yumi asks.

"Oh nothing," you say. "Just driving around, got lost, saw your house, thought we'd stop and see if you're in. I mean, I know it's Friday and you've probably got plans, but ..." You trail off hopefully.

"Sure," she says brightly. "No biggie. Lin's coming over, in fact, that's all. We were going to see if we could scare up some boys, but nothing serious. You guys'll be perfect." She opens the door wide to usher you in. As you enter, you're not sure whether to be pleased that she's willing to hang out with you or insulted that she thinks you and Caleb aren't "serious" enough for her.

She invites you sit out in the backyard—"Away from any assholes," she says—and excuses herself to finish changing. You wish she wouldn't, because she's still in her cheerleader get up from after-school practice. After she's gone, Caleb starts talking furiously. "We have to get her image when she gets back. Before Lin shows up."

"Easier said than done," you observe. "Her brother's watching us through the kitchen window. No, don't look! Jesus, I forgot about him."

"Well, we gotta make some kind of play, and fast."

"And if he looks out here and sees us hovering over his unconscious sister he'll kick our asses to Yokohama or somewhere. Look at 'im. He ain't built like a football player, but I bet he could hit so hard and fast you wouldn't notice your teeth were gone until he picked them up and showed them to you."

"Then maybe we should bail."

"Don't panic. He might leave when Lin gets here."

"But then Lin would be here."

"And Lin's body is almost as sweet as Yumi's. Actually, it could all work out." You wave him to silence as Yumi reappears.

She's changed into jeans and a loose-fitting blouse that does a heart-breakingly good job of hiding all of her curves. "That's a nice outfit," you lie.

"Just old clothes," she shrugs. "I put 'em on when I don't feel like dressing up. Glad you like them, though." You are beginning to wonder if she is intentionally dropping these insults.

The three of you sit on the grass and talk of this and that: school and homework and teachers and bullies. You ask her if Chelsea Cooper is as big of a bitch to her friends as she is to everyone else. Yumi just smiles. It's at that point that Lin Pol arrives.

Lin is also of Asian extraction, but she's taller than the short, bouncy Yumi, with wider hips and bigger boobs. She also wears her hair long and down below her shoulders. If Yumi looks like she'd be a fun and intense fuck, Lin looks like the kind of girl you could slowly and sweetly drown yourself in.

She's as happy to see you as Yumi was, which is to say she seems very sweet and pleasant and complimentary, but she has a disconcerting habit of saying things that seem a little condescending. She seems to go out of her way to ask Yumi if she'll be going to the Halloween party with Paul Davis. Yumi laughs and says he hasn't asked her yet. Lin laughs in turn and teases her about holding out for James Lamont. Yumi says James is more suited for Jenny Ashton and that she's been trying to prod them together. None of these people, who you vaguely know, are A-listers; at best they are only on a level with you and Caleb. It all seems like a conscious effort to put you and your friend in your place.

"Maybe I'll try to put Carson and Dana together," Yumi finally laughs.

Carson must be Carson Ioeger. "Who's Dana?" Caleb asks.

"Oh, she's my cousin. One of them. You don't know her, she goes to Eastman. Dana Pak."

"I have a cousin who's Japanese," you blurt out. "Maybe you know her? She used to go to Eastman. Umeko Prescott."

"Just because she's Japanese doesn't mean I know her," Yumi says in a tone that is just a few degrees cooler than the one she'd been using a moment ago. "Anyway, wouldn't she be half-Japanese with a name like Prescott?"

"No, she's full Japanese. She was adopted by my Aunt Mary and Uncle Scott. Oh, and I didn't mean—"

"I know what you didn't mean," Yumi says. "I'm just teasing you. But I don't know your cousin."

The conversation shifts in another direction, to family, but you drop out, preoccupied. It's been awhile since you've seen Umeko; you've been spending so much spare time with Caleb that you can't remember the last time you hung out with her. It occurs to you that you could use this new mask on her instead; you could get to her more easily than you can to either of these girls.

Oh, but you'd have to share her with Caleb; worse, it would be Caleb wearing her form. You don't like that idea much. It's one thing to fuck Caleb when he looks like a girl you barely know but lust after; it's another to have him wearing a girl who's known you since you were very young, who you've long had a crush on, who taught you how to kiss ...

Yeah, you don't want that.

You shake yourself back to the present when Yumi excuses herself and says she needs to go inside. Caleb catches your eye meaningfully. You ask her if you can get some water, and follow her in when she says "Of course." The blank mask is wrapped in the jacket you've been carrying with you all this time.

And yet, even as you walk slightly behind her and admiring her ass, your mind drifts from Yumi back to Umeko. No, you don't want to copy Umeko. You want to be with the real one. But you can't do that as yourself. Then how would you do it?

As you enter the house you hear Mokichi's rough voice calling to someone in Japanese. And then it hits you: Umeko had complained about having lost her ability to speak native tongue shortly after being adopted, and wanting to relearn it. As Mokichi—or his identical twin—you could find her, hang out with her, teach her Japanese, get close to her ...

And the dude is nicely ripped, which would be a huge help in getting all that dirt together for the new golems.
