Fortunately for Caleb, his favourite pub with the special on wings wasn't very far away.
His walk definitely down to a waddle, Caleb still enjoyed walking with Cat - and she definitely enjoyed watching her growing boyfriend and his increasing corpulence rolling down the sidewalk beside her! Her hand in his bigger, more padded one, the two of them filled a sidewalk fairly well, and when they pulled over to the side let an oncoming pedestrian have some room, Cat got a fell of Caleb's lovehandles pushing up against her hand, or even her side.
Fortunately there were only two steps up into the pub, so no strain for Caleb's largish leg muscles to lift his growing gut up. Of course, by this point the rich odor of greasy pub food and beer was making Caleb's mouth water and his appetite rear its head, no matter that he'd already spent several hours this afternoon 'sampling' Cat's wares in the bakery.
Inside, several screen showed different games, but Caleb led Cat to their favourite table near the back - away from the bar-hoppers avidly watching the game. A waitress quickly came and got their orders for appetisers and the bucket of wings special and draft beers - full pint for Caleb, but only half for Cat - and Cat was soon engaged in her favourite passtime, feeding her boyfriend.
As the bucket neared its bottom, Caleb sat, slightly glassy-eyed, Cat steadily slipping the wings into his waiting mouth, when their reverie was interrupted by a deep male voice.
"Cat, is that you?"
"Roddy, how are you? Long time no see," Cat responded. "You're looking good."
Caleb's eyes focused on the stranger as he came out of his reverie.
"Snagged a new guy, eh?" the stranger asked Cat. "It looks like he's happy to be with you," he went on.
"He is," Cat said as Caleb commented, "I am!"
"Well, as long as he's willing," the stranged alluded.
"You were plenty willing at the beginning," Cat pointed out.
"Yeah, well, then I figured out that there wasn't an end point," the stranger riposted. "Anyway, if you're both happy... See you around." The stranger then resumed walking towards the washrooms.
"What was that about?" Caleb inquired.
"Old boyfriend," Cat replied. "Didn't part on the best of terms."
"I figured."
"Water under the bridge," Cat soothed.
The bucket was done a moment later, and Caleb, two pints of beer and a bucket of wings sloshing inside him, needed to relieve himself. As he entered the washroom, the stranger was just washing his hands.
"You're with Cat," he stated baldly. "And it looks like you've been with her for a while," he observed.
"Why'd you say that?"
"Well, unless you were a pretty tubby nerd before, I'd say she's packed a few - quite a few? - pounds onto you. I used to date her, back in grade 12, I know how dangerous she is - she and her family bakery."
"Dangerous?" Caleb probed.
"Yeah, to a guy's weight and waistline," the stranger remarked. "When we started dating, I told her I was trying to add a few pounds for football. In no time, I'd ...
