Chapter #7

Birthday party take 2.

    by: BeeJay Author IconMail Icon
About half an hour later, I was feeling better, so I sat up. It looked like I'd thrown up on the bed. Mrs. Edozoik had cleaned me up as much as she could, but I still needed to wash my face and hair.

In my bathroom, I took off my pajamas, and saw why my chest was itching yesterday: I now had three nipples. This brought home what was happening to me. By the time Mom brought Baby No. 4 into the world, I wouldn't look like the rest of the family: I would be a Metaturian. I checked myself for a tail, but I didn't have one. Not yet, anyway.

******************************

After being drunk and sick all day yesterday, my appetite had come back. Mom and Dad made sure I had plenty of caffeine-free things to drink, and Dad even let me have some beer. It didn't taste like anything I'd had before, and the alcohol didn't affect me at all.

At noon, all my friends came, and my belated 10th birthday party was ready to begin.

Mrs. Edozoik and her son, Corran, started by taking a glass out of the cupboard and pouring something into it. "You've dealt with one of the worst things about being a Metaturian," Mrs. Edozoik said, "so here's one of the best things: It's called nekta juice."

I was skeptical, as it looked muddy, but it tasted wonderful. It was like mango-flavored beer.

Most of the gifts from my friends would be things I could keep using (books, movies, games), although Missi apologized for getting me combs and barrettes for my hair. "It's okay," I told her, "you couldn't have known I was going to change. I'll use these every day, for as long as I can."

"You'll need to wait for your gifts from us," Mom said. "You'll need shoes for six-toed feet, and pants and underthings that can accommodate a tail."

"I understand, Mom."

Jeff signed, *What will having six fingers do for your sign language?*

I laughed and signed, *Think of it like speaking with an accent.*

That said, I was glad that I'd be done changing by the time school started.
