Korra had been living on Air Temple Island for over two months, and she still hadn't learned a shred of air bending. Unable to create anything more potent than the slight gusts of wind created by waving her hands around quickly, meaning that as an Airbender, she was exactly as powerful as the next non-bender citizen of Republic City.
"Ugh, this is so frustrating! Why can't I get this!" The hot-headed Avatar in training yelled, releasing a burst of flames into the air in anger.
"I could at least use the other three elements by the time I was four years old!" Korra continued to yell, clearly aggravated.
"What did Jinora say? I need to be in a calm state of mind in order to Airbend?" Korra asked herself, realizing that a calm state of mind wasn't something that came naturally to her, able to admit at least one of her shortcomings.
However, it did give her the chance to calm her burning temper. "Breathe, be like the wind, flow forward with the breeze. Guide the current and make it stronger, then Airbend!" Korra grunted, spinning around on her heels.
To her surprise, this actually worked, and an immense orb of air began to rush around her with the strength of a small twister, blowing away some leaves on the ground at her feet.
"I did it! I'm an Airbender!" she cheered, wishing Tenzin was here to see this monumental moment in her life. However, the current was unstable. She couldn't control her own power.
The sphere began to close in on itself, compacting the young woman's body as it continued to get smaller. She could see the world outside the air-prison she created for herself growing steadily.
"What, no, this can't be happening!" she yelled, unable to stop the air stream from closing in on her with her mind in disarray, shrinking her body more by the second.
The Avatar watched powerlessly as the temple grew to an enormous size around her, reduced to the height of a bug before she could disburse her air-bending abilities.
"Oh no, what have I done? I'm so small now! I'm-I'm the size of a bug!" Korra said to herself, finding it hard to admit that she'd royally messed up.
"I need to get help before someone steps on me. Jinora! Jinora can help me." Korra said, deciding on the perfect person she could go to for support.
Jinora was much more level-headed than Tenzin and the most mature of the Aang's grandchildren. Also, she had given Korra the only piece of advice that allowed her to Airbend. Quite frankly, she regarded the 13-year-old girl as an Airbending Master on equal footing with Tenzin.
Unfortunately, she never got the chance to track Jinora down as some light footsteps landed behind her, her heartbeat trembling and skipping a beat. It had to be an Airbender. But which one?
Korra spun around and craned her neck, hoping to find that she was looking into the eyes of a gigantic Jinora. And instead, she found herself looking into the bewildered eyes of an immense Ikki. The second oldest of the three Airbending children.
"Wow, Korra, your really small! How did you get so tiny? You look like a bug. Do I look like a giant? I must look HUGE from all the way down there! Is my voice super noisy? I bet it is." Ikki said, rapid-firing questions at the shrunken Avatar, then answering them before Korra could respond. Of all the people who could have found her in this state, Ikki was one of the worst.
"Ikki, I need you to bring me to Jinora! Now! She taught me a trick to help me Airbend, and I need her to help me fix this!" Korra yelled, hoping the wind would carry her voice to reach the young Airbender's eardrums.
"Why do you need Jinora? I'm a pretty good Airbender too. You know. I'm sure I could help you." Ikki said excitedly, becoming offended that Korra was turning to Jinora for help instead of relying on her since she was already there.
"It's not that simple, Ikki! I need a master. Someone who can help me learn enough about Airbending to fix what happened to me." Korra declared, accidentally giving Ikki an idea in the process.
"I could be your teacher! I'm sure I could train you way better than Jinora could. I'll be your new Airbending Master!" Ikki decided, making up her mind, not giving Korra much choice in the matter.
"Ikki, this isn't a game!" Korra yelled at the top of her lungs. "I'm being serious." she continued, attempting to put her foot down. Unfortunately, Ikki was much bigger, so the impact created when she put her foot down was way more impactful than any stomp Korra could produce, even if she were to use her Earthbending.
"You're serious? Good, that's what every great master wants to hear their pupil say. Now let's get started with your first lesson." Ikki declared, eager to begin Korra's training.
1. Airbender's need to be quick on their feet, so Ikki suggests that Korra spend the first stage of her training avoid her feet while she tries to stomp on her, chasing Korra around the temple bareboot.
2. Airbender's are trained to be free spirits, so Ikki designs a training regiment where Korra must medaphorically break free of her worldly attachments by dropping Korra down the back of her underwear and challenging the Avatar to escape as she goes about her daily routine.
3. Ikki suggest Korra try to connect to her latent Airbending by first practicing the fundementals of the other elements, tossing Korra into her mouth to practice her waterbending forms while in motion battling her tongue.
