Chapter #5

Jason Nesmith

It had been ten years since that fateful Galaxy Fest.

The papers and magazines all called it a million dollar extravaganza to relaunch the Galaxy Quest franchise.

You knew better.

You were just thirteen years old at the time, the youngest member in the local unofficial Galaxy Quest fan club. You were James Meadows, the genius who actually understood the theoretical physics behind everything that happened on the show. You were happy the older geeks let you hang out with them.

You had no real ambitions. You would have been content just hanging out with fellow fanboys all of your life. But that all changed on the final day of that fateful Galaxy Fest.

The leader of your “fan club,” Brandon Wheegar, had sent out the call for everyone to gather all the roman candles and other similar fireworks that they could find and head to the parking lot of the convention center where Galaxy Fest was being held.

You were firing off a Roman candle when the command module containing the cast of Galaxy Quest buzzed you and knocked you flat on your ass.

The events that transpired next staggered the imagination. A piece of incredibly advanced alien technology landed in the middle of a major American city and nobody cared. The government really thought that it was a studio stunt, and slapped them with all sorts of fines for not filing the proper permits and so forth. When "the stunt" was deemed a success, a huge number of studio executives and personnel stepped forward to claim responsibility. Studio lawyers stepped in to clean up the mess and, in ten years, what should have been humanity's most historic event became a Galaxy Quest trivia question. Also in ten years, when the studio auctioned off a ton of Galaxy Quest props, you acquired the command module, but that's another story entirely.

Everyone who knew the real story...the cast of the Galaxy Quest, a group of die hard teenage fans (including you)...weren't that interested in trying to get the real story out there. To them, it was all about establishing ties between old cast members and between actors and fans. When Galaxy Quest was relaunched, all of your friends all had jobs with the franchise. A sister of one of the guys in the parking lot even plays the first officer of a Galaxy Quest spinoff.

You were literally the only person in the world who seemed interested that humanity had made first contact with an alien race and everything that represented.

You transformed yourself almost overnight.

The first thing you did was join the field and track team. You knew you wanted to go into space, and had to be in shape to do so. You also stopped “half assing” your academic career.

In addition, you had become good friends with Laliari, the Thermian female known as Jane Doe. You even became efficient at servicing a Thermian image generator.

So by age twenty three, you were a dark haired, green eyed tanned “jock” with two doctorates as well as three patents to his name. Since the patents were based on Thermian technology, you shared the proceeds derived from those patents with the cast of Galaxy Quest and your fellow fanboys.

You’ve just bought a few acres in a rural area north of the city you grew up in. Right now you have just two buildings on your property. There is a hangar which currently holds the command capsule that the rest of the world thinks is a studio prop. Next to that hangar is a very comfortably equipped double wide trailer.

It is from here that you plan to launch humanity to the stars.

The sun is setting as you walk out of your hangar, having spent the day just getting your work space set up. As you head towards your trailer, wondering what you were going to make yourself for supper, you see a shooting star. Except it’s not a falling star. It’s an alien landing shuttle, heading straight towards you!

You’ll soon learn the shuttle contains a single female alien who
