Chapter #5

Dinner invitation

    by: Spots Author IconMail Icon
As the two stumbled out of the clearing, they come across a small settlement. A number of wooden houses with thatch roofs were scattered around, and a group of digimon lounged about. Their features were akin to bears, though they only came to Gabumon's height, clearly rookie level digimon. They wore backward facing caps, and their brown fur looked spot on for a forest dwelling group. Some were carrying logs which they places by a central fire pit where they likely cooked food, while others lay out, bathing in the sun, and others carried bowls of berries that they put on a table, looking like they had just come back from foraging. Gabumon and Matt did not go unnoticed as they stumbled into their home, all eyes quickly turning to the two intruders.

"Think we're in trouble?" Asked Matt, wary as he counted their numbers. "I don't think so?" questioned Gabumon, who wasn't the type to jump into a fight. "Hey there!" he called, putting on a smile, "Don't mind us, we were just passing through and stumbled across your village."

"Welcome, travelers!" one of the bears called out, his voice as cheerful as the sun on a clear day. "We don't get many visitors here." The group quickly amassed to greet the two, Bearmon waving in a friendly manner. "We're the Bearmon, this is Bearmon village! You're just in time, we were just getting dinner ready!"

"Oh, nice to meet you, I'm Gabumon, and this is my best friend Matt." said Gabumon, relieved that they seemed friendly enough. His stomach growled involuntarily, causing him to blush in embarrassment, "And lunch sounds great," he admitted. Matt walked over looking at the fire pit, imagining the possibility, "What is dinner exactly" he asked, cautious of the possibility of a trap. "Berries of course!" said the bearmon, motioning toward the table of juicy berries. "We found the motherload of berry bushes in the forest and we're having a feast to celebrate our good fortune." Gabumon sniffed the air, "Oh, so that is what smells so good." he said, as the Bearmon began grabbing berries and eating them. One of the Bearmon came over with two bowls, handing them to Matt and Gabumon. Gabumon popped one into his mouth, chewing it, delighted at the sweet flavor. "Wow, these are delicious." he said, happily digging in. Matt took a small bite, then spat it out, "Yuck, sorry, but this tastes really bitter to me." he said, the food not agreeing with him, likely it was something that humans couldn't eat. "Guess I'm sticking to trail mix." he said as he watched the group eat.

From the bushes, the shadowy figure watched, still chuckling as he watched the festivities. Matt turned his head as he though he detected movement in his peripheral vision, but when he looked, nothing was there. He turned his attention back to the Bearmon. "Hey, any of you see anything strange going on in the forest?" he asked, his mind returning to the mission they were on. Given these were locals, if anything out of the ordinary was going on, they could have noticed. The Bearmon leader stopped eating ot think on it. "Let's see... oh, some of us thought we saw something in the forest, but we never got a good look." he said, "We tried to follow it, but found nothing. Well, nothing but these berries that is." he said, before popping a few more in his mouth. "Well, I guess that is some sort of lead." said Matt, glad to have gotten at least something. "Can you tell us where you saw it?"

The Bearmon leader pointed down a trail in the forest, "It was that way, a few hours walk, but I wouldn't go roaming the forest in the middle of the night. You can spend the night if you want." he said, looking at the sun's position where it was coming down towards the canopy. It would soon be night, and while Matt was confident in Gabumon's fighting ability, stumbling about in the dark wasn't too appealing an idea. Still, if what the Bearmon saw was something on the move, the trail could go cold if they waited to long...

You have the following choices:
