Sarah was standing in front of a berry bush on the border of the Wolfe's property, plucking raspberries from it's branches and placing them in a bucket for mistress Julia to make them into jelly later. Sarah hummed a tune to herself as she worked, when she thought she heard a familiar voice whisper her name. She looked around, but saw nobody.
She heard it again. It sounded like her mother, but that couldn't be. Her mother had been selected for the Wolfe's big meal last week. She heard the voice a third time, it sounded like it was coming from the woods in front of her. She knew she wasn't supposed to wander off the farm's property, but curiosity got the better of her.
She entered the forest and came to a small clearing. She couldn't believe her eyes! There stood her mother, alongside another woman she'd never seen before. "Mom!" She ran to her mother to embrace her, but passed. Clean through her, as though she were made of air.
"I'm sorry, little one." Said the strange woman, "But your mother is only a spirit, and cannot interact with the physical world." "Who are you?" Sarah asked "My name is Elvira. I was once like you, held captive on a farm, raised to be slaughtered like a pig. But I escaped."
"What do you mean?" Said Sarah "The wolfes are always nice to me and the others." "But they plan to eat you one day, dear." Said her mother. "They've got you conditioned to accept it. But now that I've fulfilled my purpose to them, I am no longer bound to their conditioning. Elvira has brought me back to this world, to help save you and the rest."
"But how?"
"You see, dear Sarah, long ago, humans possessed a power called magic. This allowed them to do such things as manipulate the elements, turn invisible, and countless other amazing things. This power allowed them to defend themselves from the likes of werewolves and vampires. But the power was lost, and humans became little more than cattle. But every human alive today still has the ability, buried deep inside them. I was able to unlock my potential, and escaped from the farm where I was held."
"So, you want to teach me this magic?"
Elvira nodded "Eventually. For now, enjoy having your mother back. No one else will see or hear her, so don't tell anyone about me our our meeting here today, alright?" Just then, another voice called out Sarah's name, this one a man's. She turned to see John, the protector of her herd, enter the clearing. "Sarah, what are you doing? You're not supposed to be out here. Come on now, time to head back."
When Sarah turned around again, Elvira had vanished, but her mother was still there, invisible to John. Picking up her berry bucket, she went with John back to the farm., Her mother following.
