Darren was looking at the fence. It was three layers of protection - inner fence was smooth, but for the top, while the outer fence was barbed all the way - the middle fence was electrified. Jumping over the middle was unlikely, due to the gap. Cutting the wire required tools that would have to be stolen, like rubber gloves and a wire cutter at any rate. Digging under was unlikely - six inches down, there was a retaining wall made of concrete.
He looked at the gate. It required a password, was easily watched by the Wolfes' bedroom windows, and was very obvious. Still, maybe it could be the way out.
That was when John walked up.
"How's the fence, young one?" he asked.
"Intact, like usual."
"Keeps the bears out," said John.
"And us in," said Darren.
John nodded. "Wait a few days - Robert's planning to open the gate soon, once foraging is easier to do."
"How do you stand being in here?" Darren asked. "Always surrounded by the fence."
"Because I've figured a way out," said John. "Got to get you and the others ready for it though. You need to know how to survive. Otherwise, escape is not possible."
Darren looked at John.
"I know what's in that head of yours," the older human said. "You're free where it counts - wish I had that again. If only that could be shared with the rest, escape would be even easier." John looked at him. "All must have the desire to escape, or help out in one. Otherwise, it's no good."
