Chapter #7School's Out for Summer by: BeeJay "Hello, summer vacation!" Trish yelled, as we left school for the last time as sophomores.
"How are you holding up?" Susan asked me.
"Okay, I guess," I replied. "I spent the morning throwing up; but that's to be expected." After all, I'd been throwing up every day since the day I found out I was pregnant.
"Did you figure out anything?" Trish asked.
"Not yet. If I find out anything, I'll be the first to tell you."
"I've got an idea," Susan said. "How about we go see a movie? I'm sure the folks won't mind if we're out of the house for a few more hours today."
"Which one?" Trish asked. "My Life in Miniature? New School, New Identity? From Dusk to Dawn?"
"Not that one," I replied. I wasn't one for horror pictures, even before whatever strange circumstance made me pregnant without sex.
"Let's just get ready for the movie," Susan said, "and pick one when we get to the theater."
******************************
We wound up going to see New School, New Identity. It was the story of a teenage boy, who had this rare condition that caused him to change sex. Once they found out what was going on, she had to navigate the unfamiliar territory of life as a girl, from sleepovers to periods. Fortunately, she had good friends with her, including a boy who smoothly made the transition from best friend to boyfriend. It was a nice story, and it took my mind off my own, more delicate condition for a while.
After the movie, I had to use the little girls' room for, like, the fifteenth time that day. Bad enough that my screwed-up pregnancy hormones were doing this to me; according to Mom, it would only get worse, as my womb was sitting on top of my bladder.
As I left the bathroom, I literally bumped into somebody; and who should that somebody be but... 💓Kevin Stewart!💓 "Excuse me," he said.
"Excuse me," I replied, unable to take my eyes off his face; if there are such things as angels, then the finest artisans among them had been assigned the task of creating Kevin Stewart's face.
"I've seen you in school, haven't I?" he asked me.
"Uh-huh," I replied, inwardly jumping up and down because Kevin Stewart was talking to me!
"I think I'd like to see you again. Maybe see another movie?"
"I'd like that." Of course, I'd like a tour of the local sewage treatment plant, if Kevin Stewart wanted to take me.
"Can I get your number, so I can arrange it?"
"Oh! Sure!" I gave him my home phone number, unable to believe my luck.
"Great. I'll call you in a couple of days." And I went back to my girlfriends, and he went off to do whatever it is that the world's most perfect people do.
"Did I see what I think I just saw?" Trish asked me.
"I know, right? Who'd have thought that I would run smack-dab into Kevin Stewart? And that he'd ask me out? I can't believe it's happening to me!"
"Just remember," Susan said, "that's not the only thing that's happening to you right now. I've heard about guys dumping girls when they got pregnant, and that's when they're the father. How do you think Kevin will react when he hears about your little bun in the oven? One he knows he didn't put there?"
"Oh, don't stress her out," Trish said to Susan. "Cassie deserves to have a little happiness; don't spoil it for her."
But it was too late to stop my good mood from being ruined. Now, all I could think of was what Kevin would say when I told him I was going to have a baby. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
