Chapter #6Another Surprise by: BeeJay "You're pregnant."
Two words I least expected to hear directed to me. After all, like I told the doctor, I was sexually inactive.
Mom immediately rounded on me. "Alright, young lady," she said, "what's his name?"
"Mom, there isn't anybody. I don't know how this could have happened."
"Is that what you're going with?"
"It's all I've got. I haven't done anything."
Mom turned to Dr. Ross. "Have you ever heard anything so ridiculous?"
"As a matter of fact, yes."
Now it was Mom's turn to hear something she didn't expect to. "Are you saying that you believe this?"
"My father used to say, 'Once is happenstance; twice is coincidence; the third time, there's a pattern forming.' I can't go into detail - doctor-patient confidentiality, you understand - but your daughter is the third girl her age this week to come to me, who has reacted precisely this way."
Mom looked from me to the doctor and back.
******************************
After apologizing, we left the doctor's office. No prizes for guessing which two pieces of information went around my mind in circles: How did I get pregnant? And who else was in the same predicament?
We stopped at the grocery store. Mom picked up plenty of dairy products ("for calcium," she said) and ginger snaps ("They were a big help for me with morning sickness"). At least I was getting comfort from her now.
After school let out, Sienna came home, accompanied by my two best friends (well, my only friends, if you want to get technical), Heidi Brewster and Monica Bright. "Hope you're feeling better, sis," Sienna said.
"For now," I replied. I didn't know much about morning sickness, but I knew that mornings came around every day.
"We got your homework assignments," Heidi said, handing me my books and a list. "Hope this doesn't happen too often."
"No guarantees."
"Did the doctor figure out what you've got?" Sienna asked. "Nothing catching, I hope."
"No worries, little sister: What I've got, you can't get from me."
"So what is it?" Monica asked.
"I'm pregnant. I have no idea how I got pregnant. And, according to the doctor, there are two other girls in town who can say the exact same thing." indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
